Henryk Szeryng plays Sibelius's Violin Concerto Op. 47. The London Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky, London 1965. Szeryng playing the concerto in the mid-50s: (http•••) Restored recording. Pics: Helsinki in the early 1900s, Sibelius's Ainola house project 1903-4; the Finnish political situation: the era of russification; the political assassination of Governor Bobrikov by Eugen Schauman in 1904; the general strike of 1905, the law on general elections in 1906; the first Parliament elected in 1907. Old postcards from some of cities where Sibelius went for work and/or pleasure in 1904-06. I dag up the actual newspaper advertisements of some of the first performances of the Concerto, the 1st soloists. First version: Helsinki, Feb 8th, 1904 (Viktor Nováček); Definitive version: Berlin, Oct 19th, 1905, cond. Richard Strauss, soloist Karel Halíř. Halíř was the Leader of the Berlin Philharmonic at the time, and one of the first performers of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major. Halíř played in one concert not only the premiere of Sibelius's Concerto, but also the premiere of the equally difficult "Divertissement" by Charles Martin Loeffler.

Can you get an overdose of Sibelius's Violin Concerto? Let's try it out with another Henryk Szeryng rendition, dating from the 1950s. The actual LP seems to be able to fetch serious dollar (500+) due to its rarity. If you happen to have that record in your collection, here's the restored sound to go with it! Szeryng in 1965: (http•••) "Association artistique des Concerts Colonne", now Orchestre Colonne conducted by Ernest Bour. I found no reference info on the recording, but judging by the LP reference number sequence, and it being a monophonic microgroove 33 1/3 LP, the date is likely 1954-6. The violin is way too loud on the recording, and the orchestra is probably a small one. Restored recording.
