Finnish premiere of Magnus Lindberg’s Second Piano Concerto
Nicolas Hodges brought a degree of refinement and grace to Lindberg’s often percussive writing. Magnus Lindberg ’s tenure as composer-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic resulted in several new works, including his second piano concerto. Dedicated to Yefim Bronfman, the concerto was clearly conceived with Bronfman’s imposing virtuosity in mind. Similar to the other works from Lindberg’s New York tenure, the second piano concerto radiates with both exuberance and joy. One of the more striking aspects of this concerto is the clear influence of Ravel’s Concerto for the left hand. From the bass-register dominated opening, to the harmonic and gestural similarities, one might think that Lindberg’s work would be the result if Ravel wrote a piano concerto today. Nevertheless, Lindberg’s trademark sound world is unmistakably present: swirling filigrees, parched woodwind fanfares, and massive brass chorales. The soloist in this evening’s concert was Nicolas Hodges, making this the first performance of […]

The Leonard Bernstein Letters, a jubilant and luxuriant book
A work that is at once appealing, captivating, even fascinating andengaging, superabundant, made up of 650 letters, memos and notes, selected, prioritized, with detailed care and foresight, with thoughtful rigor and relevance by Nigel Simeone, drawn from Leonard Bernstein ’s enormous body of correspondance (with a second volume to follow!) From the first letter, concise, imperious, sent by a young Lenny to Helen Coates, informing her quite simply, “I’ve decided to study with you,” (she would be his piano teacher from 1932 to 1935, then his secretary from 1944 to 1989), to the final 650th letter, written by Georg Solti , dated October 10, 1990, which Bernstein most probably didn’t read… He died on the 14th. From Lenny to 1001 correspondents (in random order, Copland, Mitropoulos, Reiner, « Kouss », Ormandy, Toscanini (letter 291), Diamond, Schuman, Poulenc, Stravinsky, Milhaud, Cage, and several others!!); from 1001 correspondents (Sondheim, Boulanger, Foss, Alsop, […]
