Claudin Sermisy Pierre Attaingnant Fasolo 1533 1535
Mauldicte soit (maudite soit) 0:06 Original chanson a 4 (ATTB) plus lute 1:22 lute reduction 2:36 instrumental arrangement (3 recorders, dulcian, harp, lute) This short chanson by Sermisy appears in Attaingnant's 1535 publication "Second livre contenant XXXI chansons musicales." It is a rather concrete expression of lost love based on the socioeconomic inequities that stratified the different castes in late medieval France: a feudal system that effectively partitioned aristocratic ladies from their musician admirers. Text: Mauldicte soit, la mondaine richesse qui ma osté ma dame et ma maistresse las par vertu jay son amitie quite Mais par richesse, ung aultre la conquise Vertu na pas en amour prouesse Translation: Cursed be mundane wealth that took my lady and mistress from me. Alas, by virtue, I have ended my friendship. With wealth, another has conquered her, virtue in love has no power. Description of the photos: 1.
