Kaniava Carnegie Hall 1937 1957 1988 2008
The Lithuanian baritone Eduardas Kaniava (b. 1937) began his long operatic career in 1957 while still studying singing. He created some 40 classical roles (including Figaro and Rigoletto, Escamillo and Onegin etc) as well as most of the leading baritone characters in the Lithuanian operas. He sang in hundreds of performances, toured more than 70 countries (Sweden and Germany, Carnegie Hall and Sidney Opera etc). He was honoured with actually all possible artistic awards, was a member of the Lithuanian Parliament, a vocal professor in Vilnius, Caracas and Klaipėda. Kaniava ended his stage appearances in 2008 but is still artistically and socially active. Kaniava says “Opera is my greatest love while operetta is my beloved one”. He sang in “The Bat” by J.
