Nicolas Chédeville Rondeau Bolton 1696 1739 1762
1) Modérément: 00:00 2) Allemande: 1:17 3) Gracieusement: 3:14 4) Rondeau: 5:25 This sonata was meant for the “musette”, which is an instrument of the bagpipe family. It has two voices throughout, one for the musette, and a bass line, which could have been played on any number of instruments (In this recording, I simply play both voices on the keyboard). We don’t know much about the life of this composer. He was the brother of Pierre and Nicolas Chédeville, who were also musicians. He was born in Normandy, and rose to become the best musette player in all of France (or so it was said at the time). This sonata was the first of a group of six, published around 1739, and the style of the pieces is that of a great number of harpsichord, and other pieces that were being composed in France during that era. – David Bolton, “The Digital Harpsichordist” Really?
