While the harpsichords being built at present have already found wide acceptance, a growing interest has arisen in recent years in the special timbre of 17th and 18th century instruments. The difference in timbre between historical and modern harpsichords is due to the fact that the present method of construction in most cases deviates to a large extent from that previously used , being adapted to present-day concert practice. Use was made of the compositions by J. P. Sweelinck and A. van Noordt of a harpsichord with two manuals built in 1787 by the Leyden musician Abraham Leenhouwer. This is the only harpsichord of Leenhouwer which is known and, at the same time, one of the very few Dutch harpsichords to have been preserved . Its compass is 5 octaves (F'-E' '') and its disposition 8'8'4'. The two works of P. Bustijn are performed on a harpsichord by Andreas Ruckers, dated 1639. Flemish harpsichord building in the 17th century and particularly that of the Ruckers family in Antwerp form a climax in the history of the harpsichord . Numerous instruments which have been preserved still bear witness to this . The harpsichord played here was restored to its. original state in 1963. Its compass is 4 octaves (Cc''', with a short octave) and its disposition 8'8'4'. The Compositions The numerous compositions for organ and harpsichord by Jan Pieterszn. Sweelinck +••.••(...)) were never printed during his lifetime, but were distributed solely by means of copies. The Paduana Lachrimae is an arrangement of a melody by the English composer John Dowland. The series of variations "Unter der Linden grüne" (Under the Green Lime-Tree) consists of a theme and three variations. The Toccata (No. 29) is a piece of improvisatory character. Anthoni van Noordt +••.••(...)) came from a family of organists and instrument makers. He was organist of the Nieuwezijds Chapel and the New Church in Amsterdam . His only collection, "Tablature Book of Psalms and Fantasies", was printed in Amsterdam in 1659. Pieter Bustijn +••.••(...)) lived in Middelburg and was organist of the New Church there and carillonneur of "Long John". The works performed on this record form part of his "IX Suittes pour le Clavecin" which were published in about 1710. Modern editions of the works by Sweelinck, Van Noordt and Bustijn have been published by the Society for the History of Netherlands Music. Dr. C. C.
