Dost Ambrose Alfred Scott Gatty Gatty
Rerum Deus tenax vigor 1. O Strenght and Stay upholding all creation, / Who ever dost thyself unmoved abide, / Yet day by day the light in due gradation / From hour to hour through all its changes guide; 2. Grant to life's day a calm unclouded ending, / An eve untouched by shadows of decay, / The brightness of a holy death-bed blending / With dawning glories of the eternal day. 3. Hear us, O Father, gracious and forgiving, / Through Jesus Christ thy co-eternal Word, / Who, with the Holy Ghost, by all things living / Now and to endless ages art adored. / Amen. Words: St. Ambrose. Music: Alfred Scott-Gatty. Video: Michael-Hubert Lamla. (http•••) (http•••)
Alfred Scott Gatty Gatty 1902 1985
Alfred Scott-Gatty composed the stately hymn tune "Welwyn" in 1902, and the "social gospel" text was written by John Greenleaf Whittier. In this video, the hymn is first played with standard SATB voicing. The melody is then played in the pedals, accompanied in the manuals with disguised versions of the hymn tune (removed of rhythm). The first 18 notes of the accompaniment (first 1.5 measures) are the first 18 notes of the hymn tune, and the idea is continued throughout the accompaniment to the end. This arrangement was composed in 1985.

1. O perfect Love, all human thought transcending, / Lowly we kneel in prayer before thy throne, / That theirs may be the love which knows no ending / Whom thou for evermore dost join in one. 2. O perfect Life, be thou their full assurance / Of tender charity and steadfast faith, / Of patient hope, and quiet brave endurance, / With childlike trust that fears nor pain nor death. 3. Grant them the joy which brightens earthly sorrow, / Grant them the peace which calms all earthly strife; / And to life's day the glorious unknown morrow / That dawns upon eternal love and life. / Amen. Tune: Welwyn by Alfred Scott-Gatty 1902 Source: Presbyterian 1940 #150 Here is my complete recording of the Presbyterian 1955 Hymnbook: (http•••) 1. Hark, what a sound, and too divine for hearing, Stirs on the earth and trembles in the air! Is it the thunder of the Lord’s appearing? Is it the music of His people’s prayer? 2. Surely He cometh, and a thousand voices Shout to the saints and to the deaf and dumb; Surely He cometh, and the earth rejoices, Glad in His coming who hath sworn, I come. 3. So even I, and with a pang more thrilling, So even I, and with a hope more sweet, Yearn for the sign, O Christ, of Thy fulfilling, Faint for the flaming of Thine advent feet. 4. Yea, through life, death, through sorrow and through sinning, He shall suffice me, for He hath sufficèd; Christ is the end, for Christ was the beginning, Christ the beginning, for the end is Christ.
