Hobbs Johann Sebastian Bach Thomas Hobbs Nederlandse Bachvereniging 2016
"It's a very personal cantata." Tenor Thomas Hobbs talks about 'Ich armer Mensch, ich Sündenknecht', which he performed with the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. The challenging tenor solo brings about a beautiful affect, which aptly expresses the angish of the text. Recorded for the project All of Bach on October 22nd 2016 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. Ambiguity and doubt resound in the opening of Bach’s cantata 'Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. The same applies to the subsequent recitative by the tenor and particularly the aria, with its indecisive rhythms and uncertain harmonies. But then the alto gives heart to the doubter: God will stand by his side in the battle, so that faith will win in the end. And just where you expect a simple chorale at the end of the cantata, suddenly you hear a grand arrangement with rousing orchestral accompaniment. It is one of the oldest Lutheran hymns, with words that testify to an unshakeable faith in God. Recorded for the project All of Bach on 28 May 2021 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. The Sinfonia in D major, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is possibly one of Bach’s most surprising compositions. According to the manuscript, it is an ‘Intrada’, an instrumental introduction to what was probably a festive cantata. However, there is no trace whatsoever of the vocal parts. This sinfonia is therefore doomed to remain an independent instrumental movement. Recorded for the project All of Bach on May 13th 2017 at the Walloon Church, Amsterdam. The unusual thing about the Sanctus in D major, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, is that there are only two independent instrumental parts: the bass part and the first violins. The other instruments double the four-part choir. So the whole work is six-part. This is probably due to the biblical source of the Sanctus, as the book of Isaiah tells of seraphim with ‘six wings’ who sing the Sanctus to one another.
