Philippe Jaroussky Andrea Marcon Nicola Porpora William Savage Giovanni Battista Andreoni Duparc Edwards Henry Theodore Reinhold Ndr Radiophilharmonie 1723 1738 1739 1740 1741 1742 2009
Philippe Jaroussky, countertenor NDR Radiophilharmonie, conducted by Andrea Marcon. Live broadcast of the concert in Hannover , on 6th February 2009 in the NDR Landesfunkhaus, Grosser Saal. G.-F. Händel , Aria of Tirinto "Se potessero i sospir´ miei " ( Atto primo) from the opera "Imeneo "( HWV 41). The composition of "Imeneo" was a very complicated time for Händel - his operas "Faramondo" and "Serse" , both premiered 1738, were only a little success and he missed the financial support for the next saison . So was the future of the Italian Opera in London not more sure. On 23th July Händel begun the Oratorio "Saul" , but it was also obviously problematic for him , so he started already in September with "Imeneo" , though he hasn´t some chance to bring it to a staging. "Saul " was finished on 27th September and Händel started immediately with the composition of "Israel in Egypt", finished on 11th October. First after he composed " Ode for St. Cecilias Day " ( September 1739) and Oratotio " L´Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato" (February 1740), he returned in September to a partiture of "Imeneo" and finished it on 10th October 1740. The Italian libretto was adapted from Silvio Stampiglia´ s "Imeneo", written 1723 in Napoli for Nicola Porpora. "Imeneo" was premiered at Theater in Lincoln´s Inn Fields on 22th November 1740 like also the next and last opera of Händel , "Deidamia" ( 1741). The opera received another performance on 13th December. Händel revised the score, and this version received concert performances in Dublin on 24th and 31th March 1742. With only two hours is "Imeneo" the shortest opera by Händel. The first cast were: •Imeneo - William Savage (Bass) •Tirinto - Giovanni Battista Andreoni (Alto castrato ) •Rosmene - Elisabeth Duparc, "La Francesina" (Sopran) •Clomiri - Miss Edwards (Sopran) •Argenio - Henry Theodore Reinhold (Bass)
