Hielscher Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Eduard Devrient 1829
Hans Uwe Hielscher: Heimkehr aus der Fremde - Variations on a theme by Mendelssohn for organ When the 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy returned to his family in Berlin from his eventful trip to England and Scotland in 1829, he not only brought sketches for the Hebridean Overture and the Scottish Symphony, but also a complete Singspiel with the enticing title “Homecoming from Abroad”. It was premiered at the silver wedding anniversary of the parents of family members and the actor Eduard Devrient in the circle of friends and family in December 1829 in Berlin and was widely recognized. Even though Mendelssohn Bartholdy was convinced of the value of his one-act song play, even calling it his “best composition”, he did not want it to be performed outside of the family circle. Only after his death was it printed and played on various (also larger) stages. Hans Uwe Hielscher wrote a series of short variations on the catchy theme in the first eight bars of the overture, which are varied in terms of the various sound possibilities of an organ and its formal structures.
