Charles Hackett sings 'Dans la foret,' recorded in New York on 22 October 1925. The harp is played by Sepp Murscher. From Wikipedia: Charles Hackett (November 4, 1889 – January 1, 1942) sometimes referred to as Carlo Hackett, was an American tenor. He was born on November 4, 1889 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Hackett studied first at the New England Conservatory in Boston with Arthur J. Hubbard, and later with Vincenzo Lombardi in Florence. He made his stage debut in Genova, as Wilhelm Meister in Mignon, in 1914. He sang in Italy and South America, before making his debut at the Metropolitan Opera on January 31, 1919, as Almaviva. He appeared there for three seasons, also as Lindoro, Roméo, Il duca di Mantova, Alfredo, Rodolfo, Pinkerton, Wilhelm Meister, Cavaradossi, Don Ottavio, Vincent and Des Grieux. He also sang at the Lyric Opera of Chicago from 1923 until 1934. He returned to the Metropolitan on February 3, 1934 as Roméo, and performed there for another five years. Hackett made a number of recordings for Edison and Columbia, notably duets with Maria Barrientos and Rosa Ponselle, in which one can appreciate a singer with a fine technique and a certain elegance. He died on New Year's Day, January 1, 1942 in Manhattan, New York City. I transferred this side from my copy of Australian Columbia 03542.

Bellini Vergin Maria Barrientos Joan Sutherland 1906 1973
Bellini: I Puritani: “Son Vergin Vezzosa" by Maria Barrientos 1906 Maria Barrientos was one of the leading Coloratura Sopranos of the early 20th century and this recording really show why. Her flexibility and fast moving floating tones on the many vocals runs in this piece is truly amazing. It is too bad that the full sound of the soprano voice did not record well in these early acoustic recordings. While you get a good feel for how good she was, the true experience is somewhat lost in the infancy of recorded sound. Gaetano Donizetti Maria Barrientos Enrico Caruso 1835 1884 1916 1920 1946
The Mad Scene - Lucia De Lammermoor (Donizetti) Sung by Maria Barrientos With Orchestral accompaniment conducted by Giorgio Polacco. Flute Obligato by Marshall P. Lufsky Recorded by the Columbia Graphophone Company, New York, 14 March, 1916 This Issue: 12" English Columbia No.7181 Matrix 48627 "The Mad Scene" is from Gaetano Donizetti's opera "Lucia De Lammermoor" written in 1835. The opera premiered the same year in Naples. Maria Barrientos +••.••(...)) was a Spanish Coloratura soprano opera singer. Making her debut in Barcelona at the age of 15, she was very quickly invited by the premier opera houses of Europe to sing in productions. In January 1916, she starred as Lucia in The New York Metropolitan production of "Lucia De Lammermoor," only a month or so before this recording was made. Her final performances at the Met were in 1920 singing with Enrico Caruso. I think this record beautifully demonstrates and showcases a magnificent voice of the past. Recorded and processed from an original vintage 78 by myself.
