Rezitativ (Tenor) und Chor: Da aber die Juden das Volk sahen — So spricht der Herr: ich bin der Herr [13:14] But when the Jews saw the people - Thus says the Lord: I am this gentleman 29. Chor und Choral: Ist das nicht, der zu Jerusalem — O Jesu Christe, wahres Licht [14:49] Isn't that the one in Jerusalem - O Jesus Christ, true light 30. Rezitativ (Tenor, Baß) und Chor: Da das die Apostel hörten — Aber unser Gott ist im Himmel [30:40] As the apostles heard - But our God is in heaven 37. Rezitativ (Sopran): Da ward das Volk erreget wider sie [39:07] The people were excited against them 38. Chor: Hier ist des Herren Tempel [39:24] Here is the Lord's temple 39. Recitativ : Und sie alle verfolgten Paulus [41:19] And they all persecuted Paul 40. Aria : Sei getreu bis in den Tod [41:57] Be faithful to death 41. Rezitativ (Sopran, Baß): Paulus sandte hin und ließ fordern die Ältesten [45:16] Paul sent and asked for the elders 42. Chor und Rezitativ (Baß, Tenor): Schone doch deiner selbst — Was machet ihr, daß ihr weinet [47:15] Take care of yourself - what do you do that you cry 43. Chor : Sehet, welch eine Liebe hat uns der Vater erzeiget [50:47] See what love the Father has shown us 44. Rezitativ (Sopran): Und wenn er gleich geopfert wird [53:45] And if he's about to be sacrificed 45. Chor : Nicht aber ihm allein, sondern allen [54:44] But not to him alone, but to all of them Mendelssohn used strong musical symbolism to suggest the idea of the dual nature of Christ (i.e. human and divine). Following an extraordinary dramatic development, Saul's amazing dialogue with Christ takes the whole work to an emotional high. This, of course, does not mean that the rest of the narrative, chronicling Saul's life as the Christian Paul, is devoid of dramatic interest, as it includes both the titanic struggle of a contested faith and hints of God's unfathomable existence and infinite power. By adding beautiful instrumental color to his soulful oratorio arias, Mendelssohn reveals an extraordinary spectrum of religious feelings, from dark doubts to shining certainty. Ending with a strong double fugue, Paul is a beautiful and profound musical tribute to one of the founders of the Christian tradition.
