Falstaff was composed to a libretto fashioned by Arrigo Boito largely from Shakespeare’s play The Merry Wives of Windsor. Superficially the work is an opera buffa in its depiction of the travails of the penniless knight, Sir John Falstaff, but goes beyond the operatic tradition of the time. The vocal line is integrated into the orchestral texture, and with self-quotations and parodic elements, the opera is saturated with as much irony as comedy, forming the fitting culmination of Verdi’s entire operatic life. Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts this acclaimed staging of Verdi’s final masterpiece. If you're new to my channel welcome, if not welcome back. This is part of my Bach series. My goal is to put all of Bach's over 200 cantatas in the air. A flight over the Maple Syrup Festival and the Industrial part of Elmira, Ontario on April 6, 2019. Music used is Bach's cantata BWV 130. Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir (Lord God, we all praise Thee) St. Michael Epistle: Revelations xii. 7-12 (War in heaven) Gospel: Matthew xviii 1-11 (Whoever humbles himself is greatest in Heaven) Rating: 1+ Well, if there's a better way to grab the attention of an anglican than to put the Old Hundredth into a cantata, then I'd like to hear about it! This chorale cantata is framed by two verses of Paul Eber's hymn Herr Gott, dich Loben alle wir set to Louis Bourgeois's Or sus, serviteurs du Seigneur as it is more properly called. If the first movement is supercharged, then the third turns on the afterburners. A bass aria with trumpets and drums, with the trumpets soaring towards heaven. And what words! In Hell the serpent, hot with hate, forever plots our evil fate. Phew! One of the earliest memories I recall is of being taken, as a very small child, to a concert of Bach's music in our local church. Even though I don't remember what was played, I'll never forget the impression that the trumpets made on me. Perhaps this cantata movement is that piece that first brought Bach into my life. Maybe. Following a second recitative, the tenor aria turns down the temperature with a beautiful flute accompaniment and the cantata closes with a straightforward setting of the chorale melody. A late afternoon/evening flight in early July along the shoreline of Orillia, Ontario including the "Narrows", a small waterway that connects Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe. Orilllia is known as the "Sunshine or Sunset City". It is the home town of Canada's humorist Steven Leacock's. Leacock's famous "Sunshine or Sunset Sketches of a Small Town (Mariposa) " satirically sums up small towns everywhere. Mariposa is now the name of the annual music festival held along the waterfront at Tudhope Park near the Leacock Museum National Historic Site. The ending sunset was captured here. Music used is Bach's Cantata BWV 33. Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ (Alone on Thee, Lord Jesus Christ) Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity Epistle: Galatians iii. 15-22 (The promises made to Abraham) Gospel: Luke x. 23-37 (The parable of the Good Samaritan) Rating: 1 Cantata BWV 33 is a chorale cantata with the original chorale melody appearing in the first and last movements. In the first, it is very effectively introduced by upwardly rushing scales on the oboes followed by the violins. In the last, a straightforward harmonisation of the melody. In between, there is an aria and a duet separated by a recitative. The first aria perhaps outstays its welcome a little too long but it may remind you of Wir Eilen from cantata BWV 78 because of the pizzicato accompaniment for the text How fearfully faltered my steps. The duet is superb, a tender duet between tenor and bass accompanied by a duet between the two oboes. Copyright 1996 & 1998, Simon Crouch.
