Guilmant Dubois Fernand Tombelle Mustel Schola Cantorum 1854 1887 1917 1928 2021
The Baron Fernand de la Tombelle +••.••(...)) was a Parisian organist, composer and teacher. A student of Dubois, Saint-Saëns and Guilmant, he worked with the latter for many concerts at the Trocadéro, and was later an assistant to Dubois at the church of La Madeleine. He also became an important contributor to, and professor at, the Schola Cantorum, as well as writing poetry and dabbling in astronomy. His “50 Pièces pour Harmonium” were published as a handsome, large-format volume in 1917. This Sortie in D major is a Romantic fugue. All the registrations are printed in the score, including the unusual final additions of the bass 2’ (5) Harpe Eolienne, and the treble 16’ (5) Musette and 32’ (7) Baryton. The instrument is an art-harmonium built by the Mustel firm in Paris, their # 470, dated 1887, and # 4321 in the Reed Organ Society database. Performed by Michael Hendron, recorded 15 May 2021. In memory of our friend Matt Whealton, who crossed over yesterday.
