Liszt Collan Henri Sigfridsson Duisburg Franke 2013
Throwback Tuesday! :) This time around I'm posting something very dear to my heart: 2013 I got to perform together with my much beloved and revered Sensei Prof. Henri Sigfridsson at Folkwang Universität der Künste in Duisburg/Germany. I had no recollection of this recording and having generally been shy to document my playing I was happy to find this memento from our class concert. A certain mr Franke recorded this, and apparently I never returned the memory stick that contained the piece to him (sorry!) Working on the Liszt concerto with prof. Sigfridsson was a great experience. I was able to approach the piece methodically and the process felt really good. Sensei excelled at giving great advice and played divinely on our lessons (which he always did, though). Also, performing together with him was great - I don't recall us really practising much together at all, and he also received the notes about 5 minutes before the concert - still the experience was so much more rewarding than the following competition performance with orchestra, I have to say. It truly is vital that in an 'unforgiving' piece like this (or any piece for that matter) the soloist feels at ease and trusts that what s/he does is communicated to the orchestra. ♡ Enjoy! Xx
Julius Röntgen Collan Johannes Brahms Karl Stamitz Stamitz Tertis William Primrose Edvard Grieg 1855 1924 1925 1932 2021
Harri Sippel, viola Anni Collan, piano Julius Röntgen +••.••(...)): Viola Sonata in C Minor II Andante mesto - Lento, quasi fantasia III Allegro molto Recorded Live 24 October 2021 Betel Church, Turku, Finland Sound & Video by Tuomas Kourula Julius Röntgen, who was born in Leipzig, Germany but did his main life work in the Netherlands, was a talented and productive composer. His extensive oeuvre of over 600 compositions include symphonies, concerts, chamber music for many different ensembles, songs, choral works and operas. He was a contemporary and close friend of Johannes Brahms, with whom he performed in joint concerts, performing as a soloist in Brahms piano concertos while the composer himself acted as conductor. Julius Röntgen's greatest period of composing activity came after he retired from public life in 1924, a time that was ripe with experimentation and the avantgarde in classical music. While Röntgen was familiar with the trends in music of his time, he remained somewhat conservative in his musical language and use of form. For that reason, his music was mostly forgotten shortly after his death in 1932 but with the passage of time his music has come to be appreciated. The viola was gradually given more important work to do, until in the late 19th century and 20th century the instrument was looked upon as a solo instrument as well. This was due not in small part to some musicians (i.a. Karl Stamitz, Lionell Tertis, William Primrose) that raised the level of viola playing to virtuoso status, thus giving composers more incentive to write works that could exploit the viola's unique tonal qualities. Julius Röntgen wrote three sonatas for viola and piano, one in C minor in 1924 and two in 1925; one in A-flat major and one in A minor. The Viola Sonata in C minor of 1924 is in 4 movements of which in this recording is performed 2nd and 3rd movements. Composer Julius Röntgen’s contemporary and a distant relative, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, was a famous physicist who discovered the X-rays: the grandfather of the physicist and the great grandfather of the composer were brothers. It is a fact that Julius was hounded during his lifetime by the worldwide fame of his distant great uncle. Once, having arrived for his annual sojourn at Fuglsang in Denmark, a Danish newspaper reported: ‘Yesterday professor Röntgen arrived, though not the famous one.’ Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg alluded to this whilst holding a speech during Julius Röntgen’s sixtieth birthday party. In the presence of the composer he assured his audience: ‘I tell him that he is “the famous one” after all, he deserves to be, because the X-rays go no further than the bones, whereas his rays go right through!’
