Franz Schubert +••.••(...)) String Quintet in C Major - Op. 163, D. 956 For two Violins, Viola & two Cellos 1. Allegro ma non troppo 00:00 2. Adagio 19:59 3. Scherzo: Presto, Trio: Andante sostenuto 36:34 4. Allegretto 47:59 Quatuor Sine Nomine François Guye, CEllo Michael Wolf, Viola Composed shortly before his death, the ineffably beautiful String Quintet in C Major D.956 was Schubert’s last chamber music composition. It is rightfully regarded not only as one of the composer’s most important works, but as one of the major works in the whole chamber music repertoire. Thomas Mann said of the String Quintet that it is the music one would like to hear on one’s deathbed; it is indeed difficult to listen to it without feeling that Schubert must have had some premonition of the approaching end. It is the final and definitive expression of Schubert’s poetic vision, of that Romantic longing for the world beyond, whether in the dark lyricism of the first movement, the vigor of the Scherzo, the poetic Adagio, or the confident good humor of the closing movement. This parting work is juxtaposed with one of Schubert’s earliest compositions, the Overture in C Minor for string quintet which the budding composer wrote in 1811 at the age of 14. It is characterized by formal clarity and dramatic expressiveness. The Quartet Sine Nomine won First Prize and the Press Prize at the 1985 Evian International Competition; in 1987 it won the first Borciani Competition in Reggio nell’Emilia. The quartet has performed in the most important concert halls throughout Europe and America, including in London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. The quartet has also recorded Brahms’ complete string quartets as well as his four quintets, Arriaga’s three string quartets, Haydn’s six quartets op. 76 and works by Turina for Claves. They are joined by cellist François Guye for Schubert’s C-Major Quintet, and by violist Michael Wolf for the youthful Overture in C Minor. Carl Reinecke +••.••(...)) Serenade in G Minor for String Orchestra Op. 242 1. Marcia. Molto moderato 00:00 2. Arioso. Andante sostenuto 03:14 3. Scherzo. Allegretto 07:21 4. Cavatine. Adagio 10:35 5. Fughetta gioiosa. Vivace 16:34 6. Finale. Allegretto 20:52 Chamber Orchestra Kremlin Misha Rachlevsky, Conductor Carl Reinecke was a brilliant piano virtuoso. He gave his first recital at the age of twelve; in 1843 at the age of nineteen he made his first concert tour of Denmark and Sweden; and in 1846 he was appointed pianist to the court in Copenhagen. In 1860 Reinecke accepted a position at the Leipzig Conservatory, teaching piano and composition; in 1897 he was appointed its director. Reinecke was also the chief conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, a position which he held for 35 years. Reinecke was a prolific composer in many genres. He was the last major representative of the so-called «Leipzig school» which was founded by Mendelssohn and centered around the Leipzig Conservatory. While incorporating romantic trends into its music, the Leipzig school nevertheless rejected the most daring and radical manifestations of romanticism. The works on this recording offer a remarkably succinct picture of Reinecke’s style. Tonbilder [tone poems] is a collection of twelve previous compositions in well-established genres. The attraction of the Kinder-Symphonie [children’s symphony] lies not only in the various rattles or the whistles employed but also with the «concert-puzzle» in the second movement. The late six-movement Serenade Op. 242 testifies not only to the evolution of the composer’s style, but also to his remarkable stability. The Chamber Orchestra Kremlin has earned unanimous acclaim as one of the world’s leading string orchestras. A number of the orchestra’s 15 recordings for Claves Records have been distinguished with international awards. The ensemble of young musicians is led by Russian-American conductor Misha Rachlevsky.
