Enemies in Love | George Frideric Handel – Jakub Józef Orliński, Natalia Kawałek, Il Giardino d'Amore, Stefan Plewniak
Enemies in Love is a dazzling disc of Handel Arias and Duets performed by soprano Natalia Kawałek, countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński and Il Giardino d'Amore conducted by Stefan Plewniak. The album explores themes of love, jealousy, war, intrigue and religious conflict. The singers delight the listener with their virtuosic display, as one would expect from a recording from Evoe, a label specialising in vocal and orchestral Baroque music.Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński has gained a reputation as a singer of striking vocal beauty and daring stage craft. Trained at the Juilliard School, he is an avid interpreter of the roles created by Handel. Polish mezzo-soprano Natalia Kawałek studied at the Frederic Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. In the summer of 2016 she made her debut in Glyndenbourne singing Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro of Mozart. In 2016 she sang also in Verdi's Macbeth, together with Placido Domingo in Theater […]

Polish opera chief dies
Poland has lost one of its foremost musical organisers. Stefan Sutkowski graduated music school in 1955 and won an audition in the Warsaw Philharmonic, where he played oboe for two decades. In 1957 he founded the period intruments group Musicae Antiquae Collegium Varsoviense. Four years later, he made it the core ensemble of Warsaw Chamber Opera, a company he led as artistic director until he retired in 2012. Stefan died on Saturday, aged 85.

Percifield/Chiew/Reveille/Barry/Lemalu/Griffiths/Warsaw Chamber Opera Sinfonietta/Borowicz (Dux)There is a recording already available of each of these one-act British operas, by Holst and Vaughan Williams, but it has taken the redoubtable Polish label Dux to give us an alternative. Recorded live in concert at the Beethoven festival in Warsaw last March, both come across convincingly thanks to their largely English-speaking casts plus a sympathetic if perhaps not optimally dramatic performance by the Warsaw Chamber Opera Sinfonietta under conductor Łukasz Borowicz. In Vaughan Williams’s setting of JM Synge’s doom-laden play – which here comes complete with crashing wave sound effects – the mother Maurya’s grief and final liberation is conveyed by Kathleen Reveille in a powerful, tense-sounding mezzo-soprano, and the supporting singers are vivid. At the Boar’s Head is a longer but slenderer work, in which Holst fits folk tunes to speeches from Henry IV; Jonathan Lemalu is the robust Falstaff, Eric Barry the […]
