Luka Šulić and Evgeny Genchev at the Union Hall Maribor (HD 1080p)
Luka Šulić (cello) and Evgeny Genchev (piano) play popular melodies at the Union Hall Maribor, Slovenia, in December 2020. Union Hall is the only preserved building of the former Götz Brewery, which was the leading brewery in Maribor since the second half of the 19th century until the First World War. In 1911, a central building was built, Götz Hall, which was already then the largest venue for events in Maribor. In 1926 Götz Brewery became part of the Ljubljana's Union Brewery; hence the name Union Hall. But Union Brewery first limited its production in Maribor, and then stopped, and the Union Hall became the property of the music society Glasbena Matica. During the two world wars, the Union building and its hall were a place of musical activities and played an important role in the response of Slovenes to the increasing germanisation in Styria region. Cologne and Brussels were beautiful; a perfect time to visit Cologne with all its Christmas markets, traditional German food and mulled wine. This is the city that contains my favourite architectural site: The Cologne Cathedral. I find it stunning, where every inch of the city is infused with a fascinating overload of Gothic detail. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Philharmonie is situated only a minute’s walk away from here. The concert hall itself was unique too, submerged underground and with seats somewhat dauntingly surrounding close to the stage. Brussels was another atmospheric place. The Palace of Culture was extremely friendly–or at least, I thought so. I heard stories of competitors in the Queen Elizabeth Competition, who, toward the latter stages of the competition, having been shut away for a week, were told to learn a piece of contemporary repertoire that was to be performed by […]

The Poland Report Part 2: Warsaw
by Ernest Barteldes The Palace of Culture, Warsaw We boarded the bus to Warsaw at around noon – it was an unremarkable ride, but it was far better than the same route we took four years before. First, the bus was not very crowded, so we had ample leg space. Renata’s parents made us a few sandwiches for the trip, which we ate during a twenty minute stop somewhere near Lublin and washed down with some ice-cold Warka beer. The weather was quite nice, so it was a great opportunity to see the landscape and the countless towns that we crossed during the trip. We reached Warsaw at around 4 PM – the bus dropped us off in front of the Palace of Culture (more about that later). We then located our tram station and headed to the Best Western Felix hotel, which is located […]
