The other Tchaikowsky violin concerto: as Polish composer André Tchaikowsky's concerto gets its UK premiere we look at the work's intriguing history.
André Tchaikowsky in 1975If you glance quickly at the concert information for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra's performances on 8 and 9 December 2023, you could easily come away with the idea that both evenings are devoted to Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker conducted by Andrey Boreyko. You would not be entirely wrong, but the concert also includes the Scottish premieres of Nova by Victoria Poleva and the Violin Concerto "Classico" by André Tchaikowsky.The Violin Concerto is, I think, the work's UK premiere and only its third ever performance, all with soloist Ilya Gringolts. But the work is not a recent one, and in fact dates from the 1960s. The Dunedin Consort's 2022/23 season includes a new partnership with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) with them residence at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and the two orchestras will play side by side in Jörg Widmann's clarinet concerto Echo-Fragmente with Widmann as soloist, conducted by Elim Chan. Another partnership with Cumbernauld Theatre in Lanternhouse offering relaxed concerts, open rehearsals and more in a year-round residency. The ensemble's residency at Wigmore Hall continues with celebratory concerts for Christmas and New Year.They will be giving the UK premiere of Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre's Cantates bibliques in a staging produced in partnership with Mahogany Opera and HERA. Vital Signs for the Planet: combining music with new dramatic footage from NASA and National Geographic to demonstrate the impact of climate change in the last 20 years
Vital Signs for the Planet is being presented on 2 November 2021 at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall as part of Global Climate Uprising Festival at COP26 in Glasgow. The event is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Vital Signs for the Planet will involve a 100-strong symphony orchestra of young musicians from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and its Junior Conservatoire, conducted by Emil de Cou, in a 90-minute live spectacular blend of sound and cinematic visuals; combining music with new dramatic footage from NASA and National Geographic to demonstrate the impact of climate change in the last 20 years. Music will include excerpts from RVW's Sinfonia Antartica and Debussy's La mer, music by Vivaldi and Michael Giacchino, plus a live performance of Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield.
