BPO/Thielemann - Bruckner, 29 February 2024
Philharmonie Symphony no.00 in F minor, ‘Study Symphony’ Symphony no.0 in D minor Berlin Philharmonic OrchestraChristian Thielemann (conductor)Images: Frederike van der Straeten Bruckner years seem to come around considerably more frequently than most others. Presumably they do not; indeed they cannot. The sense probably reflects instead the eagerness of orchestras, conductors, and orchestral managements to make the most of any such anniversary. This concert had the merit of performing two works we have less opportunity to hear, what have come to be eccentrically numbered as 00 and 0, in performances from Christian Thielemann, conducting from memory, and the Berlin Philharmonic. I was grateful for the opportunity, though I cannot say they are symphonies to which I shall return in a hurry, not when there is so much neglected Haydn and even Mozart. In Relations: exploring links from Meyerbeer, to Loewe, to Mendelssohn, to Schumann, to Emilie Mayer and Frances Allitsen.
In Relations: Meyerbeer, Loewe, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Emilie Mayer, Frances Allitsen; Eva Zalenga, Doriana Tchakarova; hänssler CLASSIC Reviewed 13 February 2024An engaging recital with an intelligent programme that explores the complex web that linked composers and poets, male and female during the 19th century In Relations from hänssler CLASSIC features soprano Eva Zalenga and pianist Doriana Tchakarova in a programme that moves from Meyerbeer, to Loewe, to Mendelssohn, to Schumann, to Emilie Mayer and Frances Allitsen. So, a disc of Romantic composers both male and female, then, but the concept is a little deeper than that. Whilst Schumann and Mendelssohn were friends, they were also linked to Meyerbeer as all three set poems by Marianne von Willemer, the only woman who ever co-authored one of Goethe's works. Carl Loewe made music with Mendelssohn, and taught Emilie Meyer, who set poems by Heine. Heine in his turn was enthusiastic about Loewe's settings of his poetry. And Goethe […]

Mozart, 2024
This Week in Classical Music: January 22, 2024. Mozart. The main event of this week is Mozart’s birthday, on January 27th. Wolfgang Amadeus was born in 1756 in Salzburg. One of the greatest composers in history, he excelled in practically every genre of classical music. His operas are of the highest order (just think of the Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, the Marriage of Figaro, or Così fan tutte, but then there are several operas, though not as popular, such as La clemenza di Tito, The Abduction from the Seraglio, or Idomeneo, that would make any other composer proud). His symphonies are the pinnacle of the orchestral music of the Classical period, and so are his piano concertos. His violin concertos were written when he was very young (the last one, no. 5, “Turkish” was completed when Mozart was 19) but were already very good. He wrote many piano sonatas that […]
