BCTV.org by David A McConnell Feb. 18, 2021 Berks Sinfonietta and Vox Philia present their annual celebration of Black History Month. The virtual concert premieres on Saturday, February 27 at 7:30 pm and is rebroadcast on Sunday, February 28 at 4:00 pm. The performance can be viewed on Facebook and YouTube. Readers can watch by visiting www.berkssinfonietta.org and/or voxphilia.org. The program is a collaborative event, featuring performances by the Wilson High School Select Choir, conducted by Emily Fredericks, and the Lincoln University Concert Choir conducted by Dr. Camilla Horne. Wilson’s choir sings William Dawson’s exciting setting of “Soon-ah Will Be Done,” while the Concert Choir of Lincoln University performs three works, including Arnold Sevier’s stunning arrangement of Dorsey’s “Precious Lord.” Vox Philia performs Harry Burleigh’s setting of “My Lord, what a Morning,” and a moving setting of Langston Hughes […]

J.W. Hässler Returning after a quarter-century retreat from the keyboard, a pianist with the Icelandic name of Vitlaus von Horn gave the American premiere of J.W. Hässler’s 360 Preludes in All Keys (1817) under the auspices of the Frederick Historic Piano Collection in Ashburnham on May 17th. According to the performer’s extensive program notes [here ], the score of this unusual work was smuggled from the rare manuscripts collection of the Moscow Conservatory after that institution proved overly stingy about disseminating that item. Johann Wilhelm Hässler (1747-1822) was a German composer and keyboard player. He is perhaps most remembered for his having been bested by Mozart in an organ competition in Dresden. For this performance, von Horn chose the collection’s 1830 Bösendorfer grand, which the Fredericks plausibly suggested was likely Herr Bösendorfer’s first.
