Considering Nelsons’s Extended Debut
[…] to commission, Ešenvalds was his first choice. Nelsons has also made a personal mark on the BSO’s lineup of soloists. Håkan Hardenberger, the trumpet soloist in the Dean, was something of a role model for Nelsons (who began his career as a trumpet player) and Baiba Skride, the violin soloist in the Gubaidulina, went to high school with the conductor. The Rachmaninoff performance also introduced three European singers each making their BSO debuts: soprano Victoria Yastrebova, tenor Pavel Černoch, and the especially remarkable bass-baritone Kostas Smoriginas. And of course, the opening night welcomed Nelson’s wife, the soprano Kristine Opolais in an opera gala with tenor Jonas Kaufmann. Clearly Nelsons intends to import some of his artistic circle to Boston and move beyond the regular circuit of well-known soloists. But he will also need to work with American artists and make an effort to really establish himself as a member of […]

BSO and the Three Sergeis
[…] joyful scherzo with plenty of tintinnabulary effects supplied by various percussion instruments including triangle, glockenspiel, and celesta, as well as instrumental ostinati evoking change-ringing. Pavel Černoch, hailing from the Czech Republic, was the brilliant-voiced tenor soloist, especially beguiling when in dialogue with the chorus. The second movement, though speaking of love and marriage, begins surprisingly somberly but features the most resplendent orchestral textures (especially in the strings) of the whole symphony. The Russian soprano, Victoria Yastrebova, had superb control of a wide array of vocal colors: in climaxes her voice became forward and penetrating but never metallic, but in more intimate passages it was warm and sensual (“gazing at the moon” was a moment to treasure). The chorus’s final descrescendo was exquisite and the orchestral coda enchanting. The third movement tells the story of fire alarm bells that howl, groan, shriek, wail, etc. in an echt Poe tale of dismay […]

[…] Futurus was infinitely more disquieting than the batterings of the Dies Irae on either side of it. And the Sanctus was exemplary in its clarity and elation. Elsewhere, despite fine, shapely singing from the Mariinsky Chorus, too much of it felt routine, while some of the playing was curiously undistinguished. The all-important soloists, meanwhile, were mixed. Tenor Sergey Semishkur sounded attractive, but couldn't, or wouldn't, sing softly in his upper registers on this occasion. Soprano Viktoria Yastrebova, a Flower Maiden in Parsifal the previous evening, was precarious in both tone and intonation, and had an intermittent habit of snuggling up towards notes from somewhere below them. So one was grateful to mezzo Olga Borodina and bass Ildar Abdrazakov, both rock-steady and fabulous, for providing us with the most memorable performances of a very variable evening.Rating: 3/5Classical musicGiuseppe VerdiTim Ashleyguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
