[…] wrote for Citizen Kane. It is sung badly in the movie, in accordance with the demands of the plot. Aline Kutan gave us a bracing idea of what it sounds like in a thoroughly musical presentation by a soprano with an ample top. There were earnest monologues by Samuel Barber (Antony and Cleopatra), Giancarlo Menotti (The Consul) and Carlisle Floyd (Susannah), given palpable stage life by sopranos Chantale Nurse and Caroline Bleau and bass Valerian Ruminski (this last being the lone non-Canadian to take the stage). Justin Welsh was a fetching baritone in three (count ’em) excerpts from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Nurse joined him in a soaring and youthful-sounding version of Bess, You Is My Woman Now. Everyone was in good voice apart from tenor Luc Robert, who was announced as being under the weather. Mezzo-soprano Catherine Anne Daniel applied a bright, forward sound and vivacious acting style to […]

Tosca Opera Lyra Ottawa Reviewed Saturday night Opera Lyra kicked off its 30th anniversary season Saturday night at the NAC with Puccini’s Tosca. If you’re the superstitious type, you’d believe this production had been struck by the famous Tosca curse, which is to opera what unlucky Macbeth is to the theatre. First, cast member Valerian Ruminski was sacked over controversial Facebook comments . Then Ruminski’s replacement, Peter Strummer, was unable to fly due to back problems, so the Sacristan was sung (and very well) by a yet another bass-baritone, Thomas Hammons. The plague of misfortunes continued on opening night. Just before the curtain went up, it was announced that tenor James McLennan had suddenly become ill, so suddenly that a member of the chorus had to sing Spoletta’s lines from the wings while Judith Ginsburg, the company’s rehearsal pianist, acted the role onstage, en travesti. It emerged later that […]

[…] Canadian voices. I was lucky to have some wonderful mentors. I enjoy listening to students, learning from them and offering suggestions about what good classical singing is about, whether they go on to become singers, opera lovers or concertgoers. That’s important.” Tosca opens Opera Lyra’s 30th season which will also see a main stage production of The Marriage of Figaro next spring. The show has been shaken this week by the firing of bass Valerian Ruminski for some ill-thought remarks he posted on social media. Ruminski, who was to play The Sacristan in Tosca, has been replaced by Canadian bass Peter Strummer. Opera Lyra’s 2014-15 season will also feature an expanded program for young singers, more educational activities and a revamped website. Three seasons ago, Opera Lyra faced a financial abyss that threatened the company’s existence. But today it appears to be on firmer footing and looking toward the future, […]

‘Anti-gay’ comments singer says: I’m a liberal. I like to bitch.
Valerian Ruminski, the opera singer fired in Ottawa for supposedly anti-gay comments, has offered a fulsome explanation to Slipped Disc readers about his attitudes on life and the way he shares them on social media. He treats the issues raised by his conduct with frankness and self-awareness. He acknowledges his mistake and insists he has no prejudices about minorities. He seeks forgiveness. A TESTIMONIAL ABOUT MY LIFE AND THE LGBT COMMUNITY I suppose the best way to explain myself is the way that I made my big mistake. I will write it out. I have been writing caustic blurbs about politics and religion and many other topics on my Facebook page since Facebook came out back in 2008. I have a tendency to want to shock and stimulate conversation. For me it’s a way to express myself in a chaotic world where there are so many things wrong. Over-population, war, […]
