Added depth: Julien Van Mellaerts & James Baillieu mix Die schöne Müllerin with the poems not set by Schubert, read by Christopher Purves, to remarkable effect
[…] from Wilhelm Müller's original poetic cycle that Schubert did not set, using Bryan Benner's English translation. This meant that we got Müller's prologue and epilogue, along with three poems from the main cycle that Schubert omitted but which add depth to the story.Purves proved to have a lovely speaking voice, with the poetry beautifully and affectingly read, the prologue was particularly moving and the three extra poems, coming after the sixth song, Der Neugierige, the fifteenth, Eifersucht und Stolz and the seventeenth, Die böse Farbe, did not add anything to the bald narrative but provided a lot more background to the young man's strange state of mind, in particular the final of these led us into some very strange territory indeed. The epilogue, where the poet bids us farewell, was simply mesmerising.Van Mellaerts protagonist was an engaging young man, in the first song clearly pleased to be here. Van Mellaerts created a very distinct character, […]

'I have my habits, my fixations if you like ... without them I can't get any of my effects right': the first Carmen, exploring the performance of Célestine Galli-Marié
[…] that original Carmen, of which legends have been spun, probably arose because of Galli-Marié's way of performing. She remarked about her way of performing 'I have my habits, my fixations if you like [when it comes to staging] ... without [them] I can't get any of my [other] effects right'. And whilst Galli-Marié did sing some grander mezzo-soprano roles including Leonor in Donizetti's La Favorite, which had been written for the 1840s star Rosine Stolz, and Fides in Meyerbeer's Le Prophete, which had originally been written for Pauline Viardot, Galli-Marié also sang the more soubrette type roles, including a significant number of trouser roles. In fact, both she and some of her sisters seem to have excelled at these type of roles. Galli-Marié not only created Vendredi in Offenbach's Robinson Crusoe (1867), but the title role in Offenbach's Fantasio (1872) and a number of others in operas hardly known […]

A mystical intensity: Mark Padmore and Kristian Bezuidenhout in Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin
[…] was simple and touching. In 'Des Müllers Blumen' this touching simplicity moved towards mysticism, which continued in 'Tränenregen' with its wonderful piano accompaniment. Magical. 'Mein' was full of vigour from both performers, whilst 'Pause' was very interior, intense in the directness of Padmore's performance. ' 'Mit dem grünen Lautenbande' combined Bezuidenhout's perky piano and Padmore's insouciant vocal line. 'Der Jäger' was taken at quite a lick, with Padmore becoming bitter, spitting the words out. 'Eifersucht und Stolz' was fast and vivid, alternating bitterness and tenderness. The quiet tenderness of 'Die liebe Farbe' was almost bleak, by contrast 'Die böse Farbe' was vivid, yet with tender moments. 'Trockne Blumen' was spare and almost mystical by the end of the song. 'Der Müller und der Bach' was quietly haunting, with a magical piano postlude. For 'Des Baches Wiegenlied' Padmore stood to one side of the stage, no longer the young man, quietly touching […]
