Like no other: Rachmaninoff's Vespers in a remarkable new recording arranged for men's voices
[…] very much on the slow side. She takes a relaxed, spacious approach to the music, even in the faster sections towards the end. This does mean that not only do we get to relish the sounds of the male voices, but we luxuriate in them. Logic tells me that there may be a practical reason for the approach too, to allow for the extra time it might take for the contrabass voices to speak. Stephen Cleobury's altogether lighter and more fleet version with the men and boys of the choir of King's College, Cambridge knocks almost ten minutes of Antonenko's overall running time. The result is a very special recording indeed. There is a lovely sheen to the sound, the singers are clearly all very experienced in this repertoire and their relaxed quality is a joy. This is not the ultimate recording of Rachmaninv's Vespers but it is a something very […]

Christmas disc round-up: from Christmas Matins in Bavaria & Nine Lessons & Carols at King's College, Cambridge to festive brass from Canada & the Wexford Carols
[…] Bells which was written specially for the disc. In the bleak midwinter: Christmas Carols from King's The Choir of King's College, Cambridge Matthew Martin (organ) Daniel Hyde (conductor) King's College, Cambridge KGS0060 If the first service of Nine Lessons and Carols was at Truro Cathedral, the service has become irredeemably associated with King's College, Cambridge. Here Daniel Hyde (who took over direction of the choir from the late Stephen Cleobury in 2019) conducts the choir in 16 carols which were broadcast as part of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve, December 2020, along with four recorded subsequently. The recording is unique in that it is made in an empty chapel (thanks to regulations in place at the time). The music is perhaps more reflective than it might normally have been, but the choir is on strong form. […]

[…] and 65 feet wide – weigh in at 150 tonnes. If laid end to end, the pipes - the smallest one, incidentally, is as wide as a drinking straw - would span approximately nine miles. The first-ever recital fell to the English organist, William Thomas Best, on 18 July 1871 but over the years it has been played by such notable composers and organists as Anton Bruckner, Charles-Marie Widor, Camille Saint-Saens, George Thalben-Ball, Dr Stephen Cleobury and Dame Gillian Weir and, of course, by a host of contemporary artists including Nitin Sawhney, Eels and McFly. Sir Henry Wood with Vaughan Williams (top middle) and the sixteen singers who premiered the Serenade to Music in 1938 While everyone relishes the Last Night, the First Night is something to relish and enjoy, too. This year the concert features Ralph Vaughan Williams’ lovely and inspiring work, Serenade to Music, […]

Nicholas Maw - Violin Concerto and more
[…] and the recording does full justice to the enterprise. The Maw is a concerto that embraces its historical lineage without being shackled by it.
