Go, not knowing where: I chat to pianist Elan Sicroff about Russian composer Thomas de Hartmann and the Thomas de Hartmann project
[…] to the premiere of his ballet La Fleurette Rouge by the Imperial Ballet with Vaslav Nijinsky, Anna Pavlova and Mikhail Fokine dancing the leading roles. The success was so great that the Tsar gave him a dispensation which exempted De Hartmann from military service. This was in 1906, and the height of De Hartmann's career, but he did not take advantage of it. Instead, in 1908 he went to Munich to study conducting with Felix Mottl (1856-1911) who had assisted conductor Hans Richter in preparing Richard Wagner's first complete Ring Cycle at Bayreuth in 1876, and himself conducted Tristan und Isolde at Bayreuth in 1886. Richard Wagner's heir, innovative festival director, opera composer, homosexual; the complex tale of Siegfried Wagner,
[…] While on board ship he sketched his first official work, the symphonic poem Sehnsucht (longing), inspired by the poem of the same name by Friedrich Schiller. This piece was not completed until just before the concert in which Siegfried conducted it, in London on 6 June 1895. Siegfried made his conducting debut as an assistant conductor at Bayreuth in 1894; in 1896 he became associate conductor, sharing responsibility for conducting the Ring Cycle with Felix Mottl and Hans Richter, who had conducted its premiere 20 years earlier. Not a note was "cut" from any of the enormous scores; […]

Adventures on the Green Hill: Tony Cooper explores Richard Wagner's villa Wahnfried at Bayreuth
[…] Schiller. It was just completed in time before the work’s première in London on 6th June 1895 which Siegfried conducted. Although he wrote numerous other pieces none really made it to the core repertoire and his operas, basically, are forgotten about, too. Siegfried then turned to conducting making his début as an assistant conductor at the Bayreuth Festival in 1894 and became associate conductor in 1896 sharing responsibility for conducting the Ring cycle with Felix Mottl and Hans Richter, who conducted the Ring’s première 20 years earlier. The influence of Wagner’s music on the National Socialist movement was enormous especially Der Ring des Nibelungen. A self-proclaimed anti-Semite, Wagner damned Jewish music in its entirety saying ‘that it is bereft of all expression characterised by coldness and indifference, triviality and nonsense’. Such a brash and unattractive statement as this has tainted him and his music ever since. All these ideas together […]
