[…] Classics) features Andrew Nethsingha and his choir (boy trebles, male choral scholars and lay clerks) recorded live at the college's annual Advent carol service in 2018 and 2019. The music is eclectic, we hear four of the O Anthems (plainchant) along with music from Herbert Howells, Otto Goldschmidt, Hugo Distler, Elizabeth Maconchy, Telemann, Britten, Hugo Wolf, Bach plus contemporary composers Jonathan Dove, Arvo Part, Cecilia McDowall, Gabriel Jackson, John McCabe, Anthony Milner, Judith Bingham, Paul Manz, Christopher Robinson. An attractive programme, very finely sung. This is a seasonal disc without being hackneyed and the choir is on very good form at the moment. If you are interested you can still catch the 2020 service on BBC Sounds. Advent Live: Volume 2 - St John's Cambridge/Signum Classics - Amazon You only have to listen to the opening 30 seconds of the disc to know that Christmas Trilogy from CuGate […]

Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet No.7 in F major, Op.59 No.1 – Danish String Quartet

In 2012 the Danish String Quartet released an acclaimed recording of Haydn and Brahms quartets on the German AVI-music label, about which The New York Times proclaimed: "What makes the performance special is the maturity and calm of the playing, even during virtuosic passages that whisk by. This is music making of wonderful ease and naturalness..." They recorded works by Brahms and Fuchs with award-winning clarinettist Sebastian Manz at the Bayerische Rundfunk in Munich, released by AVI-music in 2014, and are currently signed with ECM Records.Violinists Frederik Øland and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen and violist Asbjørn Nørgaard met as children at a music summer camp where they played both soccer and music together, eventually making the transition into a serious string quartet in their teens and studying at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Music. In 2008 the three Danes were joined by Norwegian cellist […]

But one would be hard pressed to deny that this is one of the great Isolde assumptions available to us on the stage today. Rene Pape assumed his usual duties as King Marke (between this and the 'Manz it feels like he is always lecturing Met audiences about something) with his accustomed intelligent charm. I'll say this felt just a tad less special than his assumption in the last (second to last?) run of the Dorn production that I saw a number of years back. King Marke's monologue needs the same stasis as Wotan's Walkure Act II speech, and something about the staging here seemed to distract from that. […]
