The joyful spirituality and intellectual richness of J. S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos have made them secular holiday favorites for generations. The Society provides dependably secure performances of them year in, year out; this season’s crew includes the harpsichordist Kenneth Weiss, the violinist Kristin Lee, the bassist Scott Pingel, and the hornist Stewart Rose.

A press release from SFS contains information about personnel changes this season: Eugene Izotov joins the orchestra as principal oboe.Chris Gaudi continues as acting associate oboe, as a one-year substitute.Dan Carlson has received tenure as principal second violin. Paul Brancato continues as acting associate principal second violin. Members of the section will rotate as acting assistant principal. Sarah Knutson continues as a one-year substitute member of the second violin section. SFS principal bass Scott Pingel is on a partial leave of absence this season to teach at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Associate principal bass Larry Epstein retired at the end of the 2014-15 season, after 41 years with the Orchestra. San Fran faces losing principal bass
Scott Pingel has been appointed associate professor of music at the University of Michigan, starting this fall. He’s taking leave of absence from the San Francisco Symphony and the SF Conservatory to test the winter, but San Fran may soon have a big seat to fill.

The program opened with a completely charming slide show of the conductor from toddlerhood to adulthood; through the miracle of software, his face morphed continuously from one to the next. Face it: he has always been a cutie with a great smile. Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Scott Pingel (SFS principal bass), and Jacob Nissly (SFS principal percussionist) played Gershwin's "Sweet and Lowdown" while the photos rolled, and proved that they can swing pretty darned well.
