Michigan's Interlochen Center for the Arts will now house Rosalyn Tureck's eight decades of work — including manuscripts of essays, books, correspondence, as well as recordings of her live performances, lectures, and masterclasses. Most notable are her research and performances of Bach's music. “Dr. Rosalyn Tureck’s pioneering work as among the first women to conduct […] The post appeared first on The World's Leading Classical Music News Source. […] Tristano, and given that the scandalously skimpy liner insert (one sheet: the cover photo with brief notes on the reverse. Th-th-that’s all, folks), I had to turn to Wikipedia for more information to find that Francesco Tristano is the stage name of Luxembourg-born Franscesco Tristano Schlimé (b. 1981), who composes both classical and electronic music and also plays the clarinet. He is a Julilliard graduate who has gone on to study keyboard with Emile Naoumoff, Rosalyn Tureck, and Mikhail Pletnev. Well, that confirmed several things I had suspected from listening to the CD several times. First, that Tristano had some serious chops, along with a serious regard for and interest in early music. Also, that he must have some experience in the electronic manipulation of sound, of what could be done in a studio. The musical program consists of Tristano originals written in the style of early music masters, Tristano’s “takes” on […]

Beethoven 2021
[…] in October of 1802 Beethoven wrote a letter to his brothers, which we know as the Heiligenstadt Testament, in which he confessed to contemplating suicide. And at the same time, he wrote this joyful piece. Here it is, brilliantly performed by Stephen Kovacevich. There are several more anniversaries this week: Zoltan Kodály, a wonderful Hungarian composer and a lifelong friend of another very talented Hungarian, Béla Bartók, was born on December 16th of 1882. Rosalyn Tureck, an American pianist and harpsichordist, an excellent interpreter of the music of Bach, was born in Chicago on December 14th of 1913. And speaking of Chicago, Fritz Reiner, who directed the Chicago Symphony from 1953 to 1962, was born on December 19th of 1888, in Budapest, Hungary.

Post Bach: Preludes, Fugues, and Bach-Inspired New Music (CD review)
[…] Post Bach was one of those CDs for which the notes were not included, so I had to do some internet sleuthing to discover what Post had to say about his intentions:”Post Bach is about using the past as inspiration, about drawing on years of playing and listening to create something new. Growing up, the music of J.S. Bach was my bread and butter. I listened obsessively to the recordings of Glenn Gould and Rosalyn Tureck. Encouraged by my teacher Irena Orlov, I tackled the intimidating five-voice C sharp minor fugue as a young boy, and the entire Well-Tempered Clavier soon after. My own Prelude and Fugue in the same key, written and dedicated to her, completes the album, and all of the original music here comes from the few months that followed her passing in 2018. My love of Bach’s music is with me whenever I compose, but it […]
