The selection starts with Brahms, and firmly on dry land with Meine Liebe ist grün and Wenn du nur zuweilen lächelst. Whilst water flows in Da unten im Tale , it is only with the final song in the group Verzagen that we reach rushing waters of the sea. Germany takes command of Beethoven 2020
Not waiting for the Austrians to claim him as a Viennese tax-Payer, the federal German government today announced a national festival for the 25oth anniversary of the great composer’s birth, in Bonn, in 1770. ‘The ideas he transmitted through music are more important today than ever. We need to pursue the ideals of freedom and brotherhood more than ever before, and Beethoven transmitted these in a universal language,’ said Culture Minister Monika Grütters. Very true. But surely German designers could have done better than this absolutely grotty logo.

While often using modern means, he always wanted to use them in an expressive way, and this has been the reason that in the sixties, with the emergence of ‘hard core modernism’ (which I would call ‘sonic art’ and dada), he was attacked by the composers who felt themselves representing […]

In the light of the recent media storm that hit Scotland during the referendum many things appeared both in front of and amongst us, some of them were beautiful and some were not. Sadly, however, I have been left with a very bitter aftertaste because of the way the community of composers in Scotland has been and is being portrayed. First of all, without wishing to flog a dead horse, there was an unavoidable anomaly during the referendum with regard to independence support from the artistic community – we weren’t there. Classical musician membership of the pro independence artist group National Collective is almost non existent by comparison to other musicians and art forms. There were no pro yes classical concerts. I know the vast majority of my friends are Yes voters, so where is the fault line here? Classical musicians are better off than the average guitar player, things […]
