Aldeburgh Festival at 75: Blond Eckbert and Curlew River, plus Unsuk Chin, Judith Weir, Alban Gerhardt and Daniel Pioro as featured artists
The 75th Aldeburgh Festival opens on 7 June and runs until 23 June 2024. The festival features stagings of Judith Weir's Blond Eckbert and Britten's Curlew River, and the festival's featured musicians are composers Judith Weir and Unsuk Chin, violinist Daniel Pioro and cellist Alban Gerhardt.Judith Weir's Blond Eckbert is being staged as a co-production between Britten Pears Arts and English Touring Opera, and the work is directed by Robin Norton-Hale, conducted by Gerry Cornelius with a cast that includes Simon Wallfisch and Aoife Miskelly. Ryan Wigglesworth will conduct the Knussen Chamber Orchestra in the premiere of Weir's The Planet and Wigglesworth also conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Weir's Forest. Soprano Claire Booth performs Weir's solo opera, King Harald's Saga whilst the BBC Singers perform Blue Remembered Hill. The Dartington International Summer School Foundation creates new Music Summer School & Festival at Gresham's School in Norfolk
The chapel at Gresham's SchoolWith the collapse of the Summer School at Dartington, the Dartington International Summer School Foundation, a charity which was supported the Summer School since 1976, has created a new incarnation in Norfolk.The Music Summer School and Festival will run at Gresham's School in Norfolk from 27 July to 10 August 2024 with a wide range of participatory courses along with a full programme of concerts, talks and events. Courses include choral singing and vocal music; orchestras and ensembles; individual instrumental and vocal classes and workshops; medieval, renaissance and baroque ensembles; jazz and improvisation; wind band and string ensemble; chamber music; and composition.Conductor Andrew Griffiths will be working on Bach's St John Passion, and conductor Jane Glover works in Mozart's Requiem. 75th Aldeburgh Festival: Judith Weir's Blond Eckbert, Britten's Curlew River, Sumidagawa & more
The plans for next year's Aldeburgh Festival have been announced, and it turns out that 2024 is one of those years full of celebratory numbers. 2024 will be the 75th Aldeburgh Festival, composer Judith Weir's 70th year, 60 years since the premiere of Britten's Curlew River and Roger Wright's last festival after 10 years of being CEO. So, plenty to celebrate then.The festival opens with a new production of Judith Weir's 1994 opera Blond Eckbert, a co-production with English Touring Opera that will be directed by Robin Norton-Hale and conducted by Gerry Cornelius. Upper Coppice Wheel returns us to drones so deep and thrumming, we might almost be listening to the sound of machinery, perhaps another of the multiple historical layers.Little London Wheel combines water-powered with musician-made sounds to magical effect, different timbres combining in a way that is part improvisation but partly the musician responding to the water-powered sounds. Hind Wheel seems to emerge from the natural sounds, yet the eerie whistle could almost be a factory whistle heard in the distance. For Swallow Wheel, a drone rumbles, never quite stable in pitch, whilst plucking forms a counterpoint that introduces another layer of complexity to the sounds.
