Of arms and a woman: late medieval wind music inspired by Christine de Pisan
Of arms and a woman: late medieval wind music; Blondel; FHR Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 27 January 2019 Star rating: 3.5 (★★★½) An engaging selection of medieval wind music inspired by Christine de Pisan's writingsThis delightful disc is inspired by the writings of Christine de Pisan (1364-1430) who, remarkably, produced a wide body of romantic poetry as well as Livre des fais d'armes et de chevalerie (The Books of Feats of Arms and of Chivalry) which just about defined chivalry and modern warfare for the Middle Ages, including the idea of the just war (fought by Kings in the name of God). There is only one surviving contemporary setting of Pisan's poetry, so here we have a wide selection of chansons which reflect the themes of her work in versions for Medieval wind ensemble performed by Blondel (Louise Anna Duggan, Emily Baines, Daniel Serafini, Lizzie Gutteridge and Belinda […]

Tavener wants to produce music that is the sound of God. His compositions today give the listener the space to create a sense of private contemplation.Whatever you think about works such as the tragically popular (in the sense of its baleful use at the most famous royal funeral of recent memory) Song for Athene, or his cello concerto The Protecting Veil, which Steven Isserlis made one of the most beloved contemporary pieces of the late 20th century, John Tavener's music is not reducible to one-dimensional labels such as "holy minimalism". That kind of categorisation suggests that Tavener's work is only ever an escape from the modern world and a retreat from and rejection of the achievements and sounds of musical modernism. If you've only heard Song for Athene, you might not think that its composer would be much of a fan of Anton Webern or Elliott Carter. But after Carter's […]
