Anglais - An operatic wordsmith: Luca Salsi's excellent La Scala recital
[…] text "In questa tomba oscura" – a grim vision of man's inevitable solitude – showing us just how much expressive variety Salsi can juice from a single text. The first setting, to music by Carpani himself, was painted in soft colours and crystal clear text; the second, a straightforward tune by Antonio Salieri, was brooding and pained; the third, by Beethoven, was much warmer and, when the baritone spluttered the word "ingrata", also bitter. Beatrice Benzi, a Scala opera coach, accompanied attentively, skillfully helping differentiate the works with contrasting backdrops. The death theme continued with "La visita alla tomba", the first of Sept morceaux de chant, of which Salsi would go on to provide a further four songs. In the second, "Il delirio amoroso", Benzi was on especially fine form, providing restlessly dynamic pianism beneath Salsi's whimsical musings. Then Salsi came into his own in Respighi's Cinque canti all'antica, most […]

This spring I interviewed three coaches who work at some of the world's most important opera houses: Coach Beatrice Benzi of Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Assistant Conductor Yelena Kurdina of the Metropolitan Opera, and Head Coach Nino Sanikidze of the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program at Los Angeles Opera. We talked via telephone about their backgrounds, their duties, and what accomplishments they think young singers must possess to enter a Young Artist Program.

[…] positively glorious. Opera A return to Opera Holland Park after a few years to see an early 20th century relative rarity by Francesco Cilea, Adriana Lecouvreur. My enjoyment of the first half was badly hampered by a full-on view of the conductor and not a lot else – a relatively expensive restricted view front row seat that wasn’t sold as restricted view! The highlight of the evening was the fantastic orchestra under said conductor, Manlio Benzi. There was some good (rather than great) singing and the updated production just about pulled it off. Sadly, OHP seems to be turning into a London version of those country house operas – rising prices, conspicuous corporate hospitality, dressing up…..if they introduce long picnic intervals, the transformation will be complete! Classical Music I don’t often go to piano recitals, then when I do I ask myself why?! A visit to Oxfordshire included one by […]

[…] musical invention. When you experience Butterfly in the theatre, only the visceral impact matters. Opera Holland Park's new production packs a punch so hard it leaves you winded. Lavish theatricals, bigger names, a glossier orchestral finish, an absence of peacocks: all these needs can be satisfied in mainstream opera houses. Yet nothing guarantees the kind of emotional intensity found in this straightforward, well-sung staging, directed by Paul Higgins, designed by Neil Irish and conducted by Manlio Benzi.Opera Holland Park's wide stage has been drawn in with plain, Japanese-style screens to suggest Butterfly's house. Apart from a sliding door at the rear, nothing in the set moves or changes. The look is traditional. Visual touchstones set the tone, from Pinkerton's American naval attire and Sharpless's three-piece suit to the stars and stripes draped to terrible effect – involving Butterfly's illegitimate child – just as the new world is about to behave ignobly […]
