A new opera, an unperformed 19th century opera, plus Weber & Bellini: I chat to Richard Tegid Jones of Rugby-based Random Opera Company
[…] is a larger audience than would be achievable from those who live locally, and Richard is keen to look at different approaches to performing. The production of Weber's Der Freischütz in April will be performed in German with spoken dialogue in German (in a standard cut version of the dialogue) with Philip Clieve as Max, Isolde Roxby as Agathe, Martin Lamb as Kaspar, and Becca Madden as Aenchen, directed by Richard Tegid Jones with Ashley Beauchamp as music director. There were debates about what language(s) to perform the work in (Richard mentions the tradition of performing the arias in German and dialogue in English), and whether to do the dialogue at all. But Richard was concerned to offer the singers worthwhile opportunities and not perform a cut down version of the work. So it will be the full opera, in German with dialogue and with surtitles, and will be filmed. […]

Opera Live at Home
Opera Live at Home is continuing its monthly series of on-line recitals. On 26 January 2021, tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens [whom we saw in 2019 in Dani Howard's Robin Hood with The Opera Story, see my review] and pianist Maria Elena Farrugia will be giving a recital of arias from Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Donizetti's L’Elisir d’Amore, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Verdi's Macbeth, and Pablo Sorozábal's zarzuela La tabernera del puerto (1936) Further ahead, soprano Milly Forrest (winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Winner Loveday Song Prize 2020) and pianist Ian Tindale perform arias by Handel, Humperdinck, Smetana, Mozart and Massenet (23 February 2021), and mezzo-soprano Joanna Harries and pianist Ashley Beauchamp perform arias by Mozart, Bellini, Johann Strauss, Massenet, Walton and Handel.
