Now this is rather fun, a disc of music inspired by the Argentine tango nuevo but created by a Norwegian pianist composer. 8 Concepts of Tango is this third of Håkon Skogstad's trilogy of tango-inspired discs, following on from Visions of Tango with the Trondheim Soloists which was awarded a Norwegian Grammy for best classical album 2021.Skogstad created 8 Concepts of Tango with seven hand-picked musicians, all experts in the intersection of Argentine tango with classical music: Håkon Skogstad – pianist, Andreas Rokseth – bandoneón, Åsbjørg Ryeng - bandoneón, Sveinung Lillebjerka - violin, Anders Larsen - violin, Bergmund Waal Skaslien - viola, Marit Aspaas - cello, Ole Schøyen Sjölin - double bass. The music takes inspiration from Astor Piazzolla’s Octeto Buenos Aires, so we have eight musicians and eight compositions. The video is of the first track on the disc, Caserón Porteño which is Skogstad says is "dedicated to the hotel in Buenos Aires where we grew as young musicians through musical […]

KN's Favorite Recordings of 2023
[…] fans, but perhaps this latest album, which features a generous dollop of music by classical composers, will pique some interest, at least among classical fans who also have an interest in other forms of music – as I hope most who follow this blog do. On this new release, his trio open and close the album with a piece by the Swedish composer Per Nørgård (b. 1932) titled You Shall Plant a Tree. The trio’s bassist, Anders Jormin, contributes a couple of pieces, one of them (Unquestioned Answer – Charles Ives in Memoriam) inspired by Charles Ives, with a similar feeling of ambiguity; the other (Kingdom of Coldness) tending toward a more familiar jazz sound. Even more of a familiar type of jazz tune is Jung-Hee Woo’s The Red Flower, which swings gently along. Sven-Erik Bäck (1919-1994) was a Swedish classical composer. His Communion Psalm is an expressive piece that communicates a sense of […]

Fairy Tales: Elisabeth Turmo and Elena Toponogova explore lesser-known Norwegian and Russian repertoire
Norwegian violinist Elisabeth Turmo and her duo-partner Elena Toponogova are releasing a new disc on the Quartz label, Fairy Tales, featuring a range of rarely performed fairy-tale-inspired pieces by Norwegian and Russian composers. The two are launching the disc at the 1910 Arts Club on 16 November 2023 [further details] when they will be performing music from the album. The Norwegian and Russian repertoire represents the interests of the two performers and means that Turmo will not just be playing the violin but also the Hardanger fiddle, Norway's national instrument. The disc features Norwegian music by Ole Bull (1810-1880), Johan Halvorsen (1864-1965), Trygve Madsen (born 1940), and Anders Viken (1898-1977) mixing classical repertoire with that of folk fiddlers. The interest of the Russian strand must inevitably centre two pieces by Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) based on Rimsky Korsakov's Scheherazade, but there is also the Fantasy on themes from Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera The Golden Cockerel by Efrem Zimbalist (1889-1985), […]

I think I could see, some of the time, what Ole Anders Tandberg was trying to do in his 2018 Deutsche Oper production of Carmen. There were some reasonable ideas, some less so, and some that were frankly terrible. Next to Dmitri Tcherniakov’s brilliant reimagining of the work for Aix the previous year, though, […]
