[…] largely British music, intended as a reflection on emotions from the last 18 months with Howell's Take him Lord for cherishing, William Harris' Bring us, O Lord God, Edward Naylor's Vox Dicentis: Clama, Philip Moore's Prayers of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and music by James MacMillan, Neil Cox, Holst and Biebl. There is also an organ recital from Joseph Wicks, playing the two-manual Hill organ at Boxgrove Priory with music by Bach, Gibbons, Dupre, Hindemith and Percy Whitlock, and mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston, baritone Michael Craddock and pianist Alexander Soares in songs from their Isolation Songbook [see my review of their disc]. The concert of Lobo and Victoria featured the first use by a UK ensemble of a new critical edition of Victoria’s entire Officium Hebdomadae Sanctae by Italian scholar Enrico Correggia. This is a young choir, with some 17 singers and as hear on the recording they make a lovely bright, […]

Contemporary Piano Soundbites
During the lockdown, pianist Duncan Honeybourne commissioned a series of piano miniatures by diverse composers including Graham Fitkin, John McLeod, Sadie Harrison, Francis Pott, Luke Whitlock, David Lancaster, John Casken and pieces by young and emerging composers, and he premiered these in video recitals recorded at home alongside a fundraising project for Help Musicians UK's hardship fund. Now Honeybourne has recorded a selection of the pieces as Contemporary Piano Soundbites for a disc on Prima Facie Records, and profits from the sale of the CD will also go towards the fundraising for Help Musicians UK. Recorded under social distancing conditions in July, Honeybourne's original intention in the pieces was to harness the zeitgeist of the present situation, and create an artistic keepsake of an extraordinary phase of our history. There are 23 pieces on the disc, by 22 composers ranging from one born in 1934 to one born in 1998, […]

Ears versus Brains…
[…] Reproduction, 3rd edition (Routledge, 2018, ISBN 978-1-138-92136-8) belongs in your audio research library. Do also note this paper, by Toole, which appeared on the Audioholics site: https://www.audioholics.com/room-acoustics/room-reflections-human-adaptation. It’s all about optimizing small room acoustics. The prolific Ethan Winer (http://ethanwiner.com/index.htm) offers audio guidance on his multiple websites; also in the expanded 2nd edition of his 808 page book, The Audio Expert (http://ethanwiner.com/book.htm). It’s a well organized encyclopedic reference source for all things audio. Bill Whitlock’s 2012 tutorial on audio system grounding and interfacing is well worth perusing, see https://centralindianaaes.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/indy-aes-2012-seminar-w-notes-v1-0.pdf. And Whitlock’s former company (he’s now retired), Jensen Transformers, has a comprehensive series of applications notes, AN001 thru AN009, that address related detail; see: https://www.jensen-transformers.com/application-notes/. There’s useful general audio information available here: https://geoffthegreygeek.com. And Nuts and Volts, the DIY electronics magazine, offers this on filters: http://nutsvolts.texterity.com/nutsvolts/201807/?folio=16&pg=16#pg16. Sometimes Stereophile, the equipment review magazine, provides surprising guidance, like this info on […]
