In 1964, Melodiya released a recording of the revised version with Eleonora Andreeva in the title role; in 1966, a shortened film adaptation — running 116 minutes as opposed to the recording’s 170 — appeared directed by Mikhail Shapiro and starring Galina Vishnevskaya. The revised version has been described as “bowdlerized” and “laundered,” even though some of the changes were actually made before the 1934 premiere or shortly after.
