Carl Vine: Five String Quartets - Goldner Quartet
[…] and sixth movements. The addition of the third movement appears to be unknown to the compiler of the digital booklet.] For me the String Quartet No.3, with it's sublime slow section, is the most powerful of the five on this release. It was written for the British Smith Quartet and also exists in a version for string orchestra titled Smith's Alchemy, already posted here in a recording played by the Tasmanian Symphony conducted by Ola Rudner. String Quartet No.4 was commissioned in honour of the composer's 50th birthday and String Quartet No.5 was composed for the Goldners. As expected from the wonderful Australian Goldner Quartet, they give beautifully assured performances of all five quartets. Amazingly, the quartet has consisted of the same four players since it was founded in 1995 and it is still going strong. More recently, there has been a String Quartet No..6, written in 2017 and given […]

Carl Vine: The Tempest & Oboe Concerto - Ola Rudner & Diana Doherty
Carl Vine:01. - 03. Oboe Concerto* [17'19]04. Canzona [12'00]05. - 10. Suite from 'The Tempest' [22'30]11. Smith's Alchemy [18'44]Diana Doherty- oboe*; Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ola Rudner ABC Classics 4813607 [recorded February & March, 2003; CD released 2004] [digital download; flacs, booklet, cover and inlay scans] Recording venue: Studio of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Hobart.Recording Engineer: Andrew Dixon; Producer: Brooke Green Having exhausted my collection of Peter Sculthorpe recordings, I am moving on to Carl Vine, one of Australia's leading living composers - arguably the finest overall following Sculthorpe's death in 2014. Not to be confused with a younger Australian composer, Nicholas Vines, Carl Vine was born in 1954 in Perth, Western Australia. Vine's music is largely tonal and melodic but not without its dissonant and astringent moments - even approaching atonality as in the Oboe Concerto with its wide and dramatic orchestral palette. Here the challenging solo part is […]

Reviving Twyla Tharp’s ‘Deuce Coupe’, The First Ballet-Modern Dance Fusion
Gia Kourlas got Tharp and Sara Rudner, who danced in the work’s 1979 premiere, together with Misty Copeland and Isabella Boylston, who are performing in ABT’s upcoming revival. “It was lively … but certain points became clear: How important is it to work with the artist who actually created a ballet? Very. And how scary […]
