A fascinating conundrum - Les contes d'Hoffmann: with its troubled genesis & editorial confusion, Offenbach's final opera seems unique, yet it developed out ideas from the composer's lesser-known late period
[…] and admirable booklet which describes the complex history of this fascinating work. Further listening: There are many classic recordings of Offenbach's operas which are pretty essential. But it is worth trying a number of modern recordings where scholarship has enabled performers to give rather fuller versions of the operas. There is, as yet, no ideal recording of the Kaye-Keck edition with spoken dialogue. Richard Dubugnon: Arcanes Symphoniques CD review – joy in the orchestra's swooning sonic possibilities
Gubisch/Dolié/ONF/Petitgirard/Waldman/Gabel (Naxos)In some ways the orchestral music of Swiss composer Richard Dubugnon, who is 50 next year, wouldn’t seem out of place in the Vienna of a century ago: joy in the orchestra’s swooning sonic possibilities is everywhere evident in the three works recorded here. First there’s the glitter and grand gestures of five of the Arcanes Symphoniques, the deck of tarot-inspired pieces that occupied Dubugnon on and off throughout his 30s. But the real novelties are the premiere recordings, taken live in concert, of two heady settings of even headier texts by novelist Stéphane Héaume. Triptyque (1999) pits a baritone, the resonant Thomas Dolié, against lean but vivid textures, astringent harpsichord and eerie celesta cutting through wind and brass. Le Songe Salinas (2003), a nocturnal “opera for one singer” using full orchestra alongside North African instruments, is persuasively delivered by mezzo Nora Gubisch and the Orchestre National de France, […]

Revolutionary étude
[…] Alain Altinoglu leading the Choeur et Orchestre Opera national Montpellier Languedoc-Roussillo,n does much to recommend this interesting work, at least as a musical experience. As a product of his maturity, Thérèse is more subdued and restrained than his earlier works, less overtly dramatic than intensely somber. Altinoglu elicits first-rate playing from the orchestra, highlighting the shifting colors and striking harmonies in the music. The interlude in the first act is especially haunting. As Thérèse, Nora Gubisch brings loads of temperament and angst to the role, and her mature, slightly unfocused mezzo is only occasionally strained. As the two men who love her, Charles Castronovo as Armand and Etienne Dupuis as André offer both elegant voices and elegant singing, but in truth neither part is very compelling and only serve to reflect the drama of the title character. As excellent as this recording is, I think only those with a special […]

Gubisch/Castronovo/Dupuis/Lis/Montpellier Languedoc-Rusillon Opera/AltinogluThe Spanish clearly prefer their CDs packaged in book form. We've got used to having Jordi Savall's recordings on Alia Vox issued as part of glossy, heavily illustrated tomes, and now Ediciones Singulares has decided to bring its discs out in elegantly produced hardbacks the same size as a DVD box, with generous essays providing analysis and historical context alongside a full libretto and translations. The label's specialities are neglected operas and forgotten composers; it's already released works by JC Bach, Kreutzer and Sacchini, as well as a disc devoted to cantatas by Max d'Ollone. Its first 20th-century opera is one of Massenet's lesser-known later works, in a recording taken from concert performances at last year's Massenet festival in Montpellier.Thérèse was first performed in 1907 in Monte Carlo. The two short acts (the whole score lasts just 70 minutes) are set during the French revolution, in 1792 and 1793 […]
