Giulio Caccini, 2023
This Week in Classical Music: October 2, 2023. Giulio Caccini. During the last couple of months, we’ve published several entries on two subjects: one, the musical transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque and early opera, and another, about some unsavory but talented characters in music. The protagonist of today’s entry falls into both categories. Giulio Caccini was born in Rome on October 8th, 1551. One episode that puts him into the “unsavory” category happened in 1576 when Caccini was in Florence employed by the court of Grand Duke Francesco I de’ Medici. Francesco had a brother, Pietro, who was married to the beautiful Eleonora (Leonora) di Garzia di Toledo. Pietro was known to be gloomy and violent, the marriage was unhappy, and Leonora had several affairs. Caccini, attempting to curry favors from the Duke’s family, spied on Leonora and then denounced her and her lover, Bernardino Antinori, to Pietro. Pietro […]

ASO’s Interim CEO Will Not Be Involved With Negotiations
[…] new collective bargaining agreement. The 9/22/14 edition of ArtsATL.com published an article by Jenny Jarvie which reports the WAC rebuffed an $830,000 pledge from a group of ASO board members which put the offer together on top of their regular annual gifts hoping to persuade the WAC to engage musicians in play and talk negotiations as opposed to initiating a lockout at the earliest possible moment. That effort, led by former ASO board member Ron Antinori, and the resulting rejection led to Antonori’s resignation from the board. If additional ASO board members follow Antinori’s lead, the institution is at risk of devolving into a glorified supporter society rather than serving as a responsible part in a larger governing collective designed to serve as stewards of public trust.

Atlanta shows cracks as board member quits and boss calls in mediator
ASO president Stanley Romanstein’s attempt to impose cuts by locking out his musicians has begun to fail. Hours after he announced that concerts were cancelled until November , a member of his board, Ron Antinori, made public his resignation, saying the musicians should never have been shut out. Romanstein has now quietly proposed that both sides should meet a federal negotiator to find a way forward. The mediator will be Allison Beck, deputy director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, who last month saved Peter Gelb’s skin at the Metropolitan Opera by giving away key executive powers in exchange for small wage cuts. The Atlanta musicians have agreed to meet her. This looks promising.
