Following last week’s Golden Cockerel, Trove Thursday offers another classic Russian opera not in Russian: Borodin’s Fürst Igor with Nelly Miricioiu, Marjana Lipovsek, Bodo Brinkmann, Evgeny Nesterenko, Robert Schunk and Sergei Koptchak conducted by Mark Ermler.

Valery Gergiev conducts Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet
[…] where Juliet decides she cannot live without Romeo and goes to seek help from Friar Laurence. Gergiev sweeps the listener up in the emotional drama of the moment, relishing the horns’ noble, melodic line.The LSO powerhouse strings are quite magnificent throughout, nowhere more than in the brief Act 4 scenes for Juliet’s funeral and ballet’s tragic finale; they soar passionately, not so much pulling at your heartstrings as ripping them to shreds.Other competition includes Mark Ermler’s recording, originally on the Royal Opera House’s own label, licensed through Conifer. His other ballet recordings with the ROH have recently reappeared on Sony, so a reissue of the Prokofiev may be imminent. Ermler’s is another theatrical reading, performed by an orchestra which plays this score several times each season. Mozart: Symphonies Nos. 40 and 41 (CD review)
[…] of the project's inception, 1998, it's patron was Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth; the President was Lord Menuhin; the Music Director was Vladimir Ashkenazy; the Principal Conductor was Yuri Temirkanov; the Associate Conductors were Sir Charles Mackerras, Vernon Handley, and Gennadi Rozdestvensky; and the Composer in Residence was Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Whew! That's quite an assemblage. The RPO's various recordings selected for initial release were conducted by the aforementioned people, plus by Paavo Jarvi, Mark Ermler, Barry Wordsworth, James Lockhart, Raymond Leppard, Yuri Simonov, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Jane Glover, and others. So you knew going in that this whole venture was of the highest order. Jane Glover I sampled half a dozen of the RPO organization's first releases in the then-new series, recorded between 1993-1996, with five different conductors.
