Sorciers et sorcières - Magic at the Philharmonie
[…] invade our consciousness. Much more overwhelming than in the imagination ! Extracts from Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique, Dukas The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and Saint-Saëns Danse Macabre, vividly performed. This was an afternoon perfrormance, only an hour long, and from audience noiuse in the background, there were kids in the audience, having as much fun as the adults. This is how to grow new audiences - give them excellence, without dumbing down. Laporte's texts were written by Amélie Parias, a specialist in contemporary theatre (in photo with Laporte and Roth). Possibly above the heads of some kids, but kids use their imaginations and think. Unlike some adults. For that reason, this spectacle is specially recommended for anyone who thinks standard repertoire is boring. Boring isn't in the music but in the minds of listeners who have lost the sense of wonder that is the soul of creative imagination. Exactly the types that need […]

[…] semi-medieval instruments that can be seen in other productions. Instead we have simple costumes and Peter Torpey’s beautifully spare lighting. There is no stage; the action, such as it is, is ingeniously matched to the architecture of the church (and thus will need to be carefully worked out when the production travels next year). Among the many striking features of this production is its effective use of the splendid acoustic of Trinity. This allowed Camila Parias to be heard clearly and radiantly at the end, as an angel singing from the rear balcony (she was also an exquisite Queen to Belshazzar in the first half). The cast enters silently, filing into the choir of the church, and throughout the “prelude” the music, most of it originally unharmonized chant, remains austere. But the selections grow increasingly elaborate, concluding with a brief bit of two-part Notre Dame organum (a type of harmonized […]

[…] jaunty performance by the entire ensemble—voices and instruments—of his take on Nicolai’s Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern. The group took advantage of it in other works, too, leading to some startlingly lovely combinations: Arnold Schlick’s three-part Maria zart was given gentle intimacy by tenor Daniel Hershey, recorder player Steven Lundahl, and lutenist Nathaniel Cox; and the four-part version of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen by Melchior Vulpius arrived in a stunning fashion from sopranos Camila Parias, Anne Azéma, and Deborah Rentz-Moore, along with Lundahl on the tenor recorder, epitomizing the “crystalline purity” of the music described in the printed notes. Instrumental texture was just one part of the story, though. The show opened with bass John Taylor Ward’s confident solo rendition of a 15th-century liturgical word-game song, after which much of the audience clapped. Then Parias, Azéma, and Rentz-Moore sang a 14th-century motet with ringing clarity, followed by more clapping. […]
