An exciting rediscovery: Mercadante's Il proscritto proves far more than a museum piece in this thrilling revival from Opera Rara
[…] the three act finales are remarkably innovative and daring, and his approach to the orchestra and to the dialogue was new and pointed the way forward. As a point of comparison, 1842 would also see the premiere of Verdi's Nabucco, it would be another decade before Verdi wrote his trio of masterpieces, Rigoletto, La traviata and Il trovatore, and would start his own innovations in operatic structure. The libretto of Il proscritto is by the distinguished poet Salvatore Cammarano who wrote many librettos for Donizetti including Lucia di Lammermoor (1835) as well as for several of Verdi's early opera. Indeed, the plot of Il proscritto seems almost to be an attempt at a re-run of Lucia di Lammermoor but shorn of the more extreme bel canto elements.Set in Scotland during the Interregnum, Malvina Argyll (Irene Roberts) has lost her husband Guido (Ramón Vargas) and father in a shipwreck. They were both Royalists, but urged on by […]

Back with a bang: Donizetti's Roberto Devereux from Chelsea Opera Group with Helena Dix and Eleazar Rodrigues
[…] Roberto. On Sunday 31 October 2021, Gary Matthewman conducted Chelsea Opera Group at Cadogan Hall in Donizetti's Roberto Devereux, with Helena Dix as Elisabetta, Eleazar Rodriguez as Roberto, Catherine Carby as Sara, Duchess of Nottingham, Julien Van Mellaerts as the Duke of Nottingham, James Platt as Sir Walter Raleigh, Steven Aviss as Lord Cecil and Edward Jowle as a page and a servant Donizetti's opera premiered in Naples in 1837 with a libretto by Salvatore Cammarano. Cammarano had already written the libretto for several operas for Donizetti including Lucia di Lammermoor (1835). The opera came at a time of personal turmoil for Donizetti, as both his wife and child died in 1837 and the production was delayed by an outbreak of cholera in the city. Donizetti's relations with the officials in Naples could also be problematic. An autocratic monarchy, Naples was subject to rather a repressive regime and the King […]

Anglais - Strong Singing but Questionable Staging: Luisa Miller at the London Coliseum
[…] comes to shove Albrecht, Duke of Silesia, bows to his parents’ wishes and deserts the peasant girl Giselle in favour of his betrothed Bathilde. Here, in contrast, Rodolfo loves Luisa to such an extent that he is willing to expose and renounce his father in order to have his way. ENO Luisa Miller 2020, ENO Chorus, Olafur Sigurdarson, Elizabeth Llewellyn © Tristram Kenton Schiller set the action in an eighteenth century princely court, while Verdi and his librettist Salvadore Cammarano moved it to a seventeenth century Tyrolean village. Director Barbora Horáková Joly, in this new staging for English National Opera (a co-production with Oper Wuppertal where it has already been seen) provides what is billed as a contemporary production. In the process, however, it undermines what would seem the most obvious reason for ever providing one, which is to make the story, characters, emotions or dilemmas feel more relatable. In fact, this production does not so […]

Anglais - Radvanovsky and Beczala shine in Luisa Miller at Liceu
[…] language, which will flourish in the ‘popular trilogy’ formed by Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La Traviata, which follows immediately after Luisa Miller. Luisa Miller © Liceu / A. BofillLuisa Miller © Liceu / A. Bofill Based on Schiller’s drama Kabale und Liebe, Luisa Miller inherits the theatrical force of the German dramatist’s characters but in its operatic transformation loses – due to the oppressive censorship received by Verdi and his librettist Salvatore Cammarano – the social critique dimension of the original text. Despite its musical ‘imperfection’, Luisa Miller presents great vocal demands in the main roles of Luisa and Rodolfo, which require generous voices. The demands of the score are also great on the relatively secondary characters. In the protagonist couple, we thankfully had two exceptional performers who are at the best point in their careers: North American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and Polish tenor Piotr […]
