The Wreckers & Euryanthe from Fisher Centre, Summerscape at Bard College, City Music Foundation Young Artists
[…] the SummerScape festival which happens every Summer at the Fisher Center at Bard College in the Hudson River Valley of upstate New York. The center's website has an admirable streaming page full of rarities which the festival has performed. In 2015 they gave the American premiere of Ethel Smyth's opera The Wreckers, with Leon Botstein conducting the American Symphony Orchestra and a cast including Katharine Goeldner as Thirza, Sky Ingram as Sky Ingram, Louis Otey as Pascoe and Neal Cooper as Mark. The production was directed by Thaddeus Strassberger. That the production happened at all is wonderful, Smyth's opera gets very few outings. And it is a much misunderstood work. Even if critics get over the 'It isn't as good as Peter Grimes' syndrome (forgetting that Britten's masterwork was premiered 40 years after Smyth's opera) there is a bit tendency for commentators to berate Harry Brewster's […]

Everytime we say goodbye
[…] cast, was engaged for the occasion. The pert-at-any-age Judith Howarth is the seen-it-all-before chambermaid Adele and he vocalism improves immeasurably as the evening progresses till she’s downright glorious in her last bits. Nancy Gustafson as her lady Rosalinde sings very well even if she omits the tricky middle measures in the Czardas but then which soprano doesn’t? She just lacks that last soupcon of scintillement that would make her delicious instead of merely charming. Louis Otey’s matinee idol good looks and height certainly make him believable as the rounder Eisenstein which is a refreshing change. He’s got a lovely baritone and doesn’t seem to have any trouble with the tessitura. He’s got a certain oily charm as well and he’s more than game when they make him part of the festive, if uncomfortably cramped, ballet in Act II. Anthony Michaels-Moore as Dr. Falke and Eric Garrett as Colonel Frank hit […]

[…] at the Phoenicia International Festival of the Voice this past weekend. I spoke with Jeffrey after his performance. Simona David: Jeff, was this your first year at the festival? Jeffrey Tichenor: The first year as a performer, but I attended the festival in the past. SD: How were you cast for this role? By the way, you made a great Dr. McVeigh! JT: I took a voice lesson with the Festival’s Artistic Director Louis Otey in 2014. I must have impressed him enough to have him cast me in this role. I am very appreciative of his support and look forward to more lessons with him and hopefully more performance opportunities. SD: What did this role mean to you? JT: It wasn’t until we started group rehearsals that I realized what a pivotal role Dr. McVeigh plays. He and Dr. Gilbertson are the ones trying to convince Dr. […]

The Wreckers a Monumental Revelation
[…] seemed overly long, or orchestrated rather heavily (for instance there seemed to be a lot of snare drum), Botstein kept a sense of momentum and drive, and the tempos were frequently energized with a remarkable fluidity (which the ensemble carried out with expert control). The singers were all impressive and poised. As the flirtatious/manipulative Avis, Sky Ingram was remarkable. Her lilting aria in Act I evoked something from Carmen, or perhaps Grieg’s “Anitra’s Dance.” Louis Otey was impressive as the pastor, Pascoe. While vocal fatigue weakened his high notes in Act I, by Act III he was recovered, and was compelling dramatically and musically. Katharine Goeldner (as Thirza) and Neal Cooper (as Mark) were strong, and demonstrated real chemistry towards each other. Goeldner might have employed more vocal nuance, however. The role of the chorus as the twisted community is crucial, so the success of Chorus Master James Bagwell should […]
