[…] chamber concerts in many German cities, in Austria, Switzerland, France, Scotland, Italy, Spain, Greece, the Czech Republic and Iceland are proof of his intensive concert activities. In addition to his regular work with such singers as Stella Doufexis, Ingeborg Danz, Melanie Diener, Britta Schwarz, Roman Trekel, Andrè Schuen and Tobias Berndt he has played lieder recitals with Christoph Pregardien, Simone Kermes, Luca Pisaroni, Johannes Weisser, Ruth Ziesak, Anna Lucia Richter, Norma Nahoun, Sybilla Rubens and Lothar Odinius. He has also played sonata-recitals and chamber music with Tabea Zimmermann, Antje Weithaas, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Barbara Buntrock, Pauline Sachse, Benoit Fromanger, Julian Steckel, Isand Enders, Alexander Kniazev and Konstanze von Gutzeit. Balthasar-Neumann Choir and Ensemble/Hengelbrock (Deutsche Harmonia Mundi)Premiered in Birmingham town hall in 1846, and a fixture of massed British choral societies ever since, Elijah is a prime culprit of George Bernard Shaw’s quip accusing Mendelssohn of “despicable oratorio-mongering”. But get a performance as fleet-footed and intelligent as this – conductor Thomas Hengelbrock with his excellent period-instrument ensemble and choir – and all stodge and sanctimony are swept away. There is heft when it matters, in Yet Doth the Lord, and drama-charged recitatives from fulsome voiced soloists (soprano Genia Kühmeier, alto Ann Hallenberg, tenor Lothar Odinius, bass Michael Nagy). But what’s more compelling is the nimbleness, the swift-moving parts. There are quick corners and shapely inner voices, subtle weft even in classic fat chorus numbers such as Blessed are the Men who Fear Him. Raspy period strings add God-fearing menace, the choir sound rich but luminous in detail. Continue reading...

Bayreuth 2014 Cast Lists & General Dress Rehearsal Dates
Somewhat disappointingly, this year’s Bayreuth program is virtually the same as the festival’s 2013 installment. It would have been nice to see Stefan Herheim’s Parsifal given one final revival before the hotly-awaited Jonathan Meese staging that will premiere in 2016. Oh well, we can always hope for next season. Here are the recently-announced general rehearsal dates.
