Now this is rather fun, a disc of music inspired by the Argentine tango nuevo but created by a Norwegian pianist composer. 8 Concepts of Tango is this third of Håkon Skogstad's trilogy of tango-inspired discs, following on from Visions of Tango with the Trondheim Soloists which was awarded a Norwegian Grammy for best classical album 2021.Skogstad created 8 Concepts of Tango with seven hand-picked musicians, all experts in the intersection of Argentine tango with classical music: Håkon Skogstad – pianist, Andreas Rokseth – bandoneón, Åsbjørg Ryeng - bandoneón, Sveinung Lillebjerka - violin, Anders Larsen - violin, Bergmund Waal Skaslien - viola, Marit Aspaas - cello, Ole Schøyen Sjölin - double bass. The music takes inspiration from Astor Piazzolla’s Octeto Buenos Aires, so we have eight musicians and eight compositions. The video is of the first track on the disc, Caserón Porteño which is Skogstad says is "dedicated to the hotel in Buenos Aires where we grew as young musicians through musical […]

Epic re-imagining of Miles Davis’ legendary album 'Bitches Brew' in the first ever performance from super group London Brew
[…] on the side of self-indulgence, the clash of egos on stage nether-the-less presented a fascinating listening experience. With very little evidence of any pre-agreement about form, structure, groove or even general mood, the music flowed and reshaped in strange and unpredictable ways; wallowing in a soup of distorted overlaid dissonances, or erupting into extended contesting solo lines, threaded through with bright flashes, whoops and deep growls from the synthesised alchemy of electronic sound-wizard Nikolaj Topp Larsen. The delineation of roles was blurred from the outset - often it was impossible to distinguish foreground from background, bass line from low pitched melody, beat from groove from pulse. At its best, this produced the effect of stirring an aural soup, filled with a wild variety of strong flavoured and brightly coloured ingredients, bringing different elements to the surface with every swirl. At times, however, one musician or another emerged as a dominant voice, […]

Chaminade and Jolivet, 2023
[…] her contemporary music critics of being both too feminine in her songs and lyrical piano pieces, and too masculine in the larger, more energetic pieces, such as the Konzertstück, (you can listen to it here). We don’t find anything excessively “masculine” in the piece, we’re not even sure what that term means when applied to music – it would’ve never been used by our contemporaries while discussing the music of Jennifer Higdon, Shulamit Ran, Libby Larsen, or Augusta Read Thomas. We just don’t find the Koncertstück very interesting – it has lots of trills in the style of the worst of Liszt and not much real musical material. (In this recording James Johnson plays the piano, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Paul Freeman). Chaminade’s music became popular not only in her native France but also in England and the US in the 1890s, and that continued for another […]
