Handel's Theodora, John Casken's Lear & more: ambitious plans at Northern Aldborough Festival
Fflur Wyn outside St Andrew's Church, Aldborough The Northern Aldborough Festival takes place annually in and around the 14th century St Andrew's Church in Aldborough in North Yorkshire. Under the artistic direction of Robert Ogden, this year's festival runs from 16 to 25 June 2022 and is one of the most ambitious yet. There is a semi-staged production of Handel's Theodora with soprano Fflur Wyn in the title role, Helen Charlston (mezzo-soprano) as Irene, Lawrence Zazzo (counter-tenor) as Didymus, conducted by Julian Perkins and directed by Joe Austin. Still in operatic vein, Sir John Tomlinson (bass) and Rozanna Madylus (mezzo-soprano) perform John Casken's The Shackled King based on Shakespeare's King Lear (a role that Tomlinson played in an innovative production of the play last year at the Grange Festival). Other acts include an evening of jazz from Claire Martin, clarinettist Julian Bliss with pianist James Baillieu, pianist Clare Hammond, in […]

Not an additional ornament: as he prepares to direct Handel's 'Tamerlano', Dionysios Kyropoulos discusses bringing historical stagecraft to the modern stage

With subtitles, you get one single mention of the text, but in translation you can listen to the singer and get the cumulative effect of the repetition, thus enabling the audience to get lost in the drama and not break away to extract the meaning of the words. Handel's Green Room features online discussions with director Dionysios Kyropoulos, counter-tenors Lawrence Zazzo and James Laing, theorbo player James Akers and musical director Julian Perkins on 16 February, 2 & 16 March 2022, full details from the website. Cambridge Handel Opera Company's production of Handel's Tamerlano is at the Great Hall, The Leys, The Fen Causeway, Cambridge CB2 7AD - 5, 6, 8, 9 April 2022. There is a study afternoon on 9 April 2022 at the Recital Room, West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge, CB3 9DP. […]

[…] like the sort of historically informed Josquin which often performs the secular music with the same purity of style as the sacred. We don't really know what Josquin's music was performed like, but ETO's project was a wonderful reinvention [ETO at Home] Over on Sky Arts, Handel's La Resurrezione was broadcast in a new film made at St John's Smith Square with Harry Bickett directing the English Concert with Danielle de Niese, Lucy Crowe, Lawrence Zazzo, Hugo Hymas and Brindley Sherratt. Handel's 1708 oratorio is something of a rarity in the UK, though it crops up more often in the rest of Europe. It is rather intriguing, Carlo Sigismondo Capece 's libretto is firmly in the tradition of the Italian oratorio which by this point was veering close to opera, so it is a world away from Handel's later English oratorios. Here a group of characters use solo arias and […]
