[…] Readers. His Wife and Assistant (based on historical characters who served as Milton's amanuenses) engage with and contribute to the story. Wife becomes Eve, the Assistant becomes Satan, and as the domestic scenario takes a dream-like turn we enter the Garden, and the events of the Fall are enacted. The performances feature Sir John Tomlinson as Milton with Stuart Jackson, Rozanna Madylus, Tim Morgan, and Rachel Duckett, directed by Tim Hopkins, with projections designed by Ian Winters. Andrew Gourlay conducts the New Music Players.Full details from the Brighton Festival website.

BPO/Hrůša - Dvořák, 13 October 2023
Philharmonie Dvořák: Stabat Mater, op.58Corinne Winters (soprano)Marvic Monreal (mezzo-soprano)David Butt Philip (tenor)Matthew Rose (bass)Rundfunkchor Berlin (chorus director: Gijs Leenaars)Berlin Philharmonic OrchestraJakub Hrůša (conductor) © Bettina Stöß / Berliner PhilharmonikerDvořák’s Stabat Mater is clearly a favourite work for Jakub Hrůša. A first movement of quite extraordinary power did so […]

Pelléas, Rusalka, Eugene Onegin, and Iphigénie en Tauride spring immediately to mind. Others differ strongly, I know, so it is probably more a matter of taste […]
