Takács Quartet Debuts Flow
[…] for the Takács Quartet with yourself as second viola, and don’t you think all quartets should have two violas? One of my first chamber music works is named Primal Message. It’s based on the Arecibo message sent in 1974 to M13 globular cluster 25,000 light years away. We’re awaiting a return message in about 50,000 years. It’s based on prime numbers in binary form that Carl Sagan and others who composed this message sent. Then David Shifrin, artistic director of the Phoenix Chamber Music Society Spring Festival and then artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest, commissioned me to write either a clarinet or viola quintet to premiere with the Dover Quartet. […] The Algorithm of Jazz, a video following his experience performing Artie Shaw’s concerto with the Yale Symphony Orchestra.After graduating from Yale University with distinction in both majors of music and computer science, Mr. Griffith earned graduate degrees in clarinet performance at the New England Conservatory. He was a Tanglewood Music Center fellow, where he was awarded the Gino B. Cioffi Memorial Prize and returned as a New Fromm Player. His teachers included Michael Wayne, David Shifrin, Todd Levy, and Jill Hanes. He grew up in Sheboygan, WI, and enjoys writing computer code and designing videogames.Rainer Eudeikis succeeds the late Michael Grebanier; Matthew Griffith succeeds Luis Baez.

The Music Institute of Chicago Chorale, conducted by Daniel Wallenberg with Gregory Shifrin on piano, concludes its 2021–22 season with From Africa, a free concert Sunday, June 5 at 3 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston. The performance also will be available via livestream. The program features compositions by African-American and African-Latin American composers, including Nathaniel Dett, William Grant Still, Florence Price, Thomas Dorsey, Bobbie McFerrin, and Miguel Matamorros, and songs from Kenya, South Africa, and Uganda.Soloists include Music Institute voice faculty member Rae-Myra Hilliard and guest Tramaine Parker. Guest conductor Bryan Johnson shares conducting duties with Wallenberg. Also joining the Chorale is the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation Choir.
