David Garrett gets over the heartbreak
Shutting the file on his recent erotic turbulence, the German violinist has been awarded the Frankfurter Musikpreis for 2017, a gift worth 15,000 Euros. The prize is cross-generic, as you can see from the winners below. It has consistently bypassed the leading German violinists – Mutter, Faust, Fischer, Tetzlaff, Zimmermann. Maybe they don’t like the violin much in Frankfurt. Past winners: 2017 David Garrett, Violinist 2016 Al Jarreau, Sänger und Songautor 2015 Peter Sadlo, Schlagzeuger 2014 Ernie Watts, Saxophonist 2013 Marie-Luise Neunecker, Hornistin und Instrumentalpädagogin 2012 John McLaughlin, Gitarrist und Komponist 2011 Anne Sofie von Otter, Mezzo-Sopranistin 2010 Keith Emerson, Keyboarder und Komponist 2009 Dr. José Antonio Abreu, Dirigent, Komponist und Mentor 2008 Paquito D’Rivera, Saxophonist, Klarinettist, Komponist 2007 Peter Eötvös, Dirigent, Komponist und Lehrer 2006 Peter Gabriel, Pop-/Rockmusiker 2005 György Ligeti, Komponist 2004 Udo Lindenberg, […]

Shock death of star percussionist, 54
Friends are sharing word of the death of Peter Sadlo, one of the most successful percussion virtuosi. No cause is known. Spotted when he was 20 by Sergiu Celibidache, Peter became principal percussion of the Munich Philharmonic in 1982 and professor of percussion at the city’s music academy. He switched to the Salzburg Mozarteum in 1990 and from there developed a major solo career. He could play everything, from Bach to bloues. Last year, he was awarded the Frankfurt Music Prize. Our sympathies to his family.

There’s no point in compiling a “worst orchestrators” list- the guilty parties would all be hopelessly minor and un-interesting composers. Far more interesting is to have a look at the who the great composers are who are most able to humble, wrong foot, humiliate or frustrate orchestras and composers. Some ask too much, some didn’t know what to ask for. Either way, when you see their music coming on the season schedule, be sure to set aside a bit of extra preparation time. Please share your comments below- which composers’ use of the orchestra fills you with dread? The Dangerous! Debussy Debussy was perhaps an even more imaginative and visionary orchestrator than Ravel, but he almost completely lacks Ravel’s practical and pragmatic touch. I once did a seminar on balance and texture problems that Debussy has left the composer to solve in my favourite Debussy orchestral work called “If Ravel […]
